Job summary

The advertised post of Senior Clinical Fellow is tenable for a fixed term of 12 months commencing August 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post is for an enthusiastic doctor who is post MRCS and aims to pursue a career in Trauma & Orthopaedics. It offers an opportunity to develop their career in a friendly DGH setting with ample clinical opportunities. The on-call commitment is second on call in a 1:9 rota, though this may change to 1:8 in the future. The main clinical duties will be across both emergency and elective orthopaedic care

Job description Job responsibilities

Tier 2 Staff (Associate Specialist, SPR and Senior Clinical/ Teaching Fellows) are attached to individual consultants and their duties include the following:-

When on call Note: MGs are freed from all other clinical duties and between 8am and 8pm must not be off site)

Attendance at daily 08:00 Trauma meetings. You are expected to have reviewed all patients admitted the previous day to present at the meeting.

A 11am documented ward round must be carried out with the ward cover SHO, F1 doctor and the nursing staff. This aims to review all trauma patients regarding their orthopaedic problems.

Second on-call cover for emergencies. You must respond to an A&E call if the SHO is called away to see a sick patient.

See any ward referrals to orthopaedics (not the SHO)

Plan next days trauma operating lists, and liaise with on-call anaesthetist to review suitable patient to go first on list.

Other Duties/ Expectations

Attendance at Consultant ward rounds.

Day to day care of own Consultants patients.

Attendance in morning Virtual Trauma Clinic when allocated.

Assistance with Outpatient clinics.

Assistance with theatre sessions, as required.

Please note ensure that the new Safe Site marking proforma is completed when consenting patients pre-operatively.

Weekend trauma lists.

Support the resident doctors with ward work and sick patients.

Person Specification

Essential Essential

Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative Good communication skills. Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good medical Practice. GMC registration with licence to practice MRCS. At least 2 years NHS experience Experience in formal and informal teaching Experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics at senior SHO level

Desirable Desirable

Knowledge of IT Evidence of research developments. Knowledge of Newcastle Medical School Undergraduate Curriculum Research Experience Aiming to pursue a career in Orthopaedics Previous experience as a Teaching Fellow Previous experience working within Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust
