About this role

Job summary We are looking for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Dentistry to cover a 9 month maternity leave commencing in July 2026. The appointee would be joining our Community Dental Service, to deliver level 3 paediatric dentistry care to the population of Wakefield and District. The locum consultant would be joining an established specialist paediatric dentistry team already consisting of a consultant and specialist in paediatric dentistry as well as specialty trainees and foundation trainees. This post is offered on a part time, 8 PA basis. The service provides specialist care to a wide range of children with complex medical problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, inherited and acquired anomalies of the dentition, complex dental traumatic injuries and complex social problems.

Main duties of the job This locum post is offered on a part time (8 PA) basis and is to provide cover for one of the existing consultants in paediatric dentistry who is going on maternity leave. The locum appointee would support the existing consultant and specialist in paediatric dentistry to deliver paediatric dentistry level 3 complexity care as well as to support the existing consultant develop the service. The appointee would be involved in providing training in paediatric dentistry for foundation, core, and specialty trainees as well as existing nursing and dental staff.

The post holder will demonstrate clinical leadership in the care of children and young people, within the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust Community Dental Service (MYTTCDS) in conjunction with the existing Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry. This will include children and young people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems, medically compromised, severe anxiety, phobias, and traumatic dental injuries.

The service provides specialist care to a wide range of children with complex medical problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, inherited and acquired anomalies of the dentition, complex dental traumatic injuries and complex social problems.

The role will involve a teaching commitment to specialty trainees as well as development of the whole dental team.

Main duties Patient/Client Care • To provide high quality comprehensive specialist paediatric oral healthcare for patients within MYTTCDS. This will include children that are anxious, have behavioural management problems, have complex medical problems, social problems and/ or learning/physical disabilities. • Care will be provided in clinics and domiciliary settings, which will involve driving between establishments and the transportation of appropriate equipment required for such visits. • Provision of preventative care and advice to individual patients and their parents/carers. Occasionally this may include the provision of oral health promotion services to groups of patients, parents/carers. • Provision of dental care/advice for children referred by colleagues within the service. • Participation in the exodontia list and comprehensive care general anaesthetic lists at Pinderfields Hospital as required. • Provision of care using inhalation sedation • Provision of advice and support to the clinical team and peers in a range of clinical and/or leadership situations in a professional and appropriate manner which inspires confidence, motivation, and teamwork within the field of paediatric dentistry. • Provision of guidance to parents, carers and teachers on the dental input required into multidisciplinary care plans for children with special needs. • Provision of advice and emergency care to all priority groups of patients seen within MYHTCDS. • Participation in the training, clinical teaching, and supervision of foundation/core dental trainees and specialty paediatric dental trainees. • Working with health professionals and other agencies to raise awareness of the oral health needs of children and young people and to be involved in training. • To support current lead on clinical audit/peer review programmes within the service. • These duties may require attendance at any of the Trusts dental clinics and other establishments for the purposes of service provision, in service training, staff meetings and maintenance of services during periods of staff absence.

To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) on the Specialist List for Paediatric Dentistry

Dental Performers List inclusion

BDS/BChD or equivalent Membership or Fellowship in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent (This may or may not include post CCST training and Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry (ISFE) OR equivalent. Those without post CCST / ISFE should demonstrate evidence of Management and Leadership training and/or experience that is suitable to meet the requirements of the post*)

Eligibility to work in the UK Dental Performers List inclusion

Understands the functions of the Community Dental Services. Up to date knowledge, skills and attitudes to the practice of paediatric and adult special care dentistry in the UK

Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving. Good time management.
