About this role

Department/Location: Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Cambridge

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join the BioElectronic Systems Technology Group, working on the fabrication of organic electrodes for bioelectronic applications.

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and manufacturing devices using standard cleanroom lithography techniques, with a focus on PEDOT:PSS and related materials.

The role is ideally suited to a motivated scientist or engineer with hands-on experience in microfabrication, organic electronics, or related fields. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, and characterisation of devices using cleanroom and cleanroom-free techniques for advanced bioelectronic applications. These activities are in support of ongoing research into interfacing electronics with biological systems and biosensing applications.

Key responsibilities:

Fabrication of organic electrode devices using standard lithography and cleanroom processes. Preparation and processing of PEDOT:PSS and other electrode materials. Device characterisation and quality control, with a focus on reducing batch to batch variation. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in bioelectronics, tissue engineering, and biosensing to understand implementation of devices and design criteria. Maintenance of cleanroom protocols and safety standards. Assist with experiments related to biosensing. Train and mentor inexperienced users on protocols, best practices and effective instrument operation.

The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology and the Nanoscience Centre, Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, working under the supervision of Professor Róisín Owens. The departments offer world-class facilities and a vibrant research environment, with strong links to clinical and industrial partners.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
