Job SummaryAbout the Position: Department of Psychiatric Nursing at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Rotating shift work is required, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. You will provide a wide range of nursing care to patients of all ages, contributing to their health and recovery. This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing care to behavioral health patients; performing vital signs; documenting in electronic medical records; observing patients for medication reactions or behavioral changes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Nursing. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Major DutiesPerform intake and observation of Triage patients (phone/in-person); assess mental status for emergencies.Observe for suicidal/homicidal ideation, paranoia, and medication reactions.Document vitals/behaviors in EMR; report abnormalities to RN/LIP.Process admissions (contraband searches, charting).De-escalate combative patients and assist with physical restraints.Co-facilitate group and 1-on-1 therapy.Assist with care plans and provide addiction education.Monitor patients post-ECT/TMS. Perform 1:1, line-of-sight "special watch" for high-risk patients.Take vitals, collect specimens, and escort patients.Conduct ward inspections, manage inventory, and train staff.
