About this role
In this exciting and hands-on role, you will play a key part in supporting world-leading research and teaching in tribology, rail technology, and related engineering disciplines. Working as part of the Laboratory Services Group One Team, you will contribute to the design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance of specialised laboratory equipment, ensuring the highest standards of technical excellence, safety, and innovation.
You will work both independently and collaboratively alongside academics, researchers, and students to develop bespoke experimental rigs, precision components, and engineering solutions that enable cutting-edge research. This role is approximately 70% laboratory-based and 30% workshop-based, offering an excellent balance between design, manufacturing, and experimental work.
What You’ll Do

Design and manufacture research test rigs, components, and assemblies for tribology and rail applications. Deliver hands-on training and demonstrations in the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment. Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety and quality standards, producing risk and COSHH assessments where required. Support the ongoing operation, maintenance, and improvement of the School’s laboratory and workshop facilities. Work closely with colleagues in other technical teams to deliver reliable, innovative, and service-focused technical support.
