QualificationsWho May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes processing routine and special staining of patient tissues; performing Microtomy on patient tissue samples; operating and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation within a lab; utilizing laboratory information systems (LIS) to enter and retrieve data; providing leadership to subordinates to include training and workload distribution. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Preferred but not required: A U.S. Certified Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnology (HTL) through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry or comparable certification. Preferred experience with special staining technique: Immunohistochemistry (IHC).
Major DutiesProvide anatomical and clinical laboratory operations to include specimen handling, operation of clinical information systems, and basic/complex clinical testing concepts with in a laboratory.Preform Basic and complex clinical testing concepts to include, but not limited to, gross analysis, microtomy, special staining, and immunohistochemical staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain and lymph nodes.Perform Microtomy on patient tissue samples.Enter and retrieve data into laboratory information systems as required.Supervise anatomic laboratory staff in a manner that helps facilitate fast, efficient, accurate, and precise movement and testing of clinical cases and anatomic pathology samples through the pre-testing, testing, and post-testing processes.Operate and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation in order to obtain accurate testing results.Provide on-the-job training in work procedures to subordinates and Pathology residents in both written and verbal form.Collaborate with senior laboratory and medical treatment facility management on laboratory related topics or test.Conduct a systematic review of all procedures' material and personnel requirements within the sections.Confirm proper identification, accessioning, proper fixation and processing of all tissue specimens received by the laboratory.Perform delegated personnel management functions (e.g., interviewing and selecting candidates; setting performance standards, performing quarterly counseling, preparing annual performance appraisals; distributing workload, etc.).
