About this role

Love Veterinary Medicine, But Ready for a Better Work Environment?

Are you an experienced Registered Veterinary Technician who's tired of feeling undervalued, dealing with unnecessary workplace drama, or working in an environment where your skills and contributions go unrecognized?

At Humane Vet Hospital of San Diego, we believe experienced veterinary professionals deserve respect, supportive coworkers, clear communication, and a workplace where they can genuinely enjoy what they do.

We're a family-owned and operated veterinary hospital, established in 2013, looking for a highly skilled, dependable RVT who takes pride in excellent patient care and enjoys being part of a collaborative team.

We're particularly interested in an RVT with advanced dental skills who is equally comfortable supporting surgeries, sedated procedures, and scheduled patient appointments.

This position offers scheduling flexibility, with opportunities for shorter morning shifts and additional hours based on patient care, scheduled procedures, and hospital staffing needs.

If you're confident in your technical abilities, adaptable, and looking for a hospital that values your experience, we'd love to meet you.

Why Join Humane Vet Hospital?

Family-Owned, Not Corporate

We're independently owned and operated, without layers of corporate bureaucracy. We believe decisions should focus on what's best for our patients, clients, and team.

A Small, Collaborative Team

We value professionalism, mutual respect, accountability, and coworkers who genuinely support one another.

Flexible Scheduling

We understand that work-life balance matters. Our hospital operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and we offer flexibility depending on scheduling and hospital needs.

An Owner Who Values the Team

Our hospital is managed by a non-veterinarian business owner who understands the importance of experienced veterinary professionals and recognizes the contributions they make to the hospital's success.

Professional Support

We offer dedicated HR support, continuing education opportunities, and a workplace that values open communication and professional development.

The Opportunity

As an experienced RVT, you'll play an important role in providing high-quality patient care across multiple areas of our hospital.

While advanced dental proficiency is essential, this is a well-rounded veterinary technician position—not an exclusively dental role.

Your Responsibilities

Dentistry

  • Obtain diagnostic-quality digital dental radiographs, including full-mouth series
  • Perform dental charting, scaling, cleaning, and polishing
  • Assist with dental procedures and perform permitted extractions when qualified and under the legally required direct veterinarian supervision
  • Monitor anesthesia and provide safe postoperative recovery care
  • Help maintain an organized and efficient dental workflow

Surgery & Sedated Procedures

  • Prepare patients for surgical and sedated procedures
  • Place IV catheters and perform endotracheal intubation under appropriate veterinary supervision
  • Monitor anesthesia, recognize complications, and communicate changes promptly
  • Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures
  • Provide appropriate postoperative monitoring and recovery care

Appointments & General Patient Care

  • Conduct scheduled technician appointments within your authorized scope of practice
  • Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and diagnostic procedures
  • Obtain laboratory samples and perform appropriate in-house diagnostic testing
  • Educate clients regarding treatments, medications, and postoperative care as directed
  • Maintain accurate medical records using AVImark
  • Support other areas of the hospital when needed

Teamwork & Flexibility

  • Collaborate with veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and reception staff
  • Help maintain efficient patient flow throughout the hospital
  • Be willing to extend scheduled shifts when additional surgeries, sedated procedures, appointments, or staffing needs require support
  • Take initiative, communicate clearly, and assist teammates when needed

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) registration
  • Strong hands-on veterinary dentistry experience
  • Advanced proficiency in digital dental radiography
  • Excellent anesthesia monitoring skills
  • Confidence with IV catheter placement and endotracheal intubation
  • Experience assisting with surgical and sedated procedures
  • Ability to manage technician appointments and general patient care responsibilities
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent communication, reliability, and professionalism
  • A team-oriented attitude and willingness to assist wherever needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of RVT experience
  • Extensive experience with veterinary dental procedures
  • Experience with veterinarian-supervised dental extractions
  • Proficiency with AVImark
  • Experience working efficiently in a busy general-practice hospital

We value demonstrated technical proficiency, sound clinical judgment, and a positive, dependable attitude—not simply years of experience.

Scheduling & Flexibility

We offer flexible scheduling for the right candidate.

The position may primarily involve morning procedures, particularly dentistry, with shifts that can extend later into the day depending on hospital needs.

Additional hours may be available for:

  • Scheduled surgeries and sedated procedures
  • Additional patient appointments
  • Coverage when other technicians are unavailable
  • General patient care and hospital workflow support

Our ideal candidate enjoys the flexibility of shorter shifts but is also willing and available to work longer when patient care or staffing needs require it.

Part-time or full-time arrangements may be considered depending on the candidate's availability, qualifications, and hospital needs.

Hospital Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Compensation & Benefits

$30–$33 per hour, depending on experience and demonstrated technical proficiency.

Benefits include

  • Flexible scheduling
  • 50% employer-paid health insurance premiums for eligible employees
  • Affordable dental insurance options
  • 401(k) retirement plan, subject to eligibility requirements
  • Continuing education support
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Supportive, independently owned hospital environment

Benefit eligibility may vary based on employment status, scheduled hours, and applicable plan requirements.
