About this role

We are seeking a highly motivated Marine Ecologist to join our collaborative research group at the University of Southampton. This position is funded by the NERC C-FLOOR highlight topic and offers a unique opportunity to investigate how physical disturbance, specifically bottom trawling, influences the capacity of marine sediments to act as net sources or sinks of carbon, nutrients and greenhouse gases.

Under the direction of Prof Martin Solan and Prof Jasmin Godbold you will play a central role in this NERC funded project. Specifically, you will undertake a series of manipulative laboratory experiments and field surveys (using sediment profile imaging technology) to link changes in carbon, nutrient stoichiometry and greenhouse gas dynamics with the effects of trawl gears, fishing intensity, sediment types, species composition, and seasonal timing. This position is highly collaborative requiring active engagement with partner institutions across the UK to ensure integrated project outcomes. The role requires that you take a leading role in dissemination of novel findings through high-impact, peer reviewed academic publications while continuously developing advanced technical skills and research competencies within a world-class marine science environment.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, or a closely related discipline by the start date. The candidate should have a strong background in benthic invertebrate community ecology and experience with laboratory experiments, image analysis and the interpretation of complex ecological data. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have a proven track record in written and oral communication skills with a commitment to collaborative, team-based science. Experience working at sea is desirable.

Enquiries about the post should be made my email to Prof. Martin Solan [email protected] and Prof. Jasmin Godbold, [email protected].

*Offers will be made subject to subsequent completion of an ENG1 (or equivalent) medical.
