About this role
Are you excited about the incredible opportunity that cloud computing represents? Are you passionate about delivering high-quality services and ready to apply your experience at massive scale? Amazon Web Services' Cloud Storage, Amazon S3, is one of the largest distributed storage systems in the world. We host trillions of objects and serve hundreds of millions of requests per second and we're continuing to grow! We are looking for a passionate Senior Software Development Manager to lead the organization responsible for the S3 Index Data Plane.
The S3 Index maintains the metadata for every object in S3. It is an important part of S3’s durability, performance, and scalability. In particular, the S3 Index is the request path of all mutations to S3. It is an exciting time to work in S3, with new and evolving workloads and customer expectations. As we build improvements and new capabilities in S3 to match, the S3 Index presents interesting technical challenges in distributed systems.
As the leader of this organization, you will
- Lead teams of talented software engineers and managers, fostering their growth and development while delivering critical components of S3's architecture.
- Own the vision and roadmap for the S3 Index Data Plane's systems and interfaces.
- Invent new ways to improve the customer experience for S3’s diverse customers.
- Collaborate with your teams and partner teams to invent, design, and develop highly available and scalable distributed systems.
- Build and manage partnerships and cross-org commitments with customers and dependency teams.
- Work with your teams, your peers, senior management, and senior engineers to implement best practices in software development and operational processes.
You are passionate about both building great software and great teams. You thrive leading teams with ambitious goals, where small optimizations have massive impact at scale, all while maintaining relentlessly high standards. This role is technical: you'll be expected to contribute to architecture discussions while regularly taking part in deep-dive troubleshooting exercises or technical post-mortem discussions to identify the root cause of complex issues. You have a strong understanding of distributed systems and experience operating services at scale.
