About this role

Job summary

The North Yorkshire Breast Imaging Unit is based in a modern, purpose-built facility, bringing together Breast Imaging, Outpatient Services and the multidisciplinary team in one location.

As the service covers North Yorkshire, the ability to drive across the locality during the working day is essential. Breast Imaging lease cars are provided.

Working within our well-established service is varied and rewarding. We have excellent relationships with colleagues in Surgery, Pathology, Oncology and Breast Care Nursing, supporting a multidisciplinary approach to high-quality, patient-centred care.

The unit is also the base for the North Yorkshire Breast Screening Programme, delivering services across the region. Alongside screening, we provide a comprehensive Symptomatic Breast Service, including one-stop assessment and follow-up clinics, with strong links across the wider region.

We welcome applications from candidates who do not currently hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Mammography. A comprehensive training programme will be provided over 12-18 months to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required for the role. During training, salary will be adjusted in line with Agenda for Change Annex 21 guidance

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - Breast Screening Service

Main duties of the job

The unit is forward-thinking and committed to embracing new technology and developing innovative approaches to breast imaging. It is a reference site for Hologic and Sectra equipment within the region, and the service also provides contrast-enhanced mammography as part of its breast imaging provision.

Breast screening is delivered across North Yorkshire using three mobile mammography units, covering more than 21 locations throughout the county, alongside static screening facilities in York and Scarborough.

The service provides two second-stage screening assessment clinics each week, with clinical assessment supported by Breast Care Nurses and biopsy procedures undertaken by Advanced Practitioners. We also provide three one-stop symptomatic clinics and five symptomatic follow-up clinics each week.

We have a strong commitment to role development and advanced practice. Working alongside our Specialist Breast Radiologists, the team includes four Consultant Radiographers and six Advanced Practitioners, with advanced and extended roles across film reading, biopsy and breast ultrasound.

Please note: that the essential character of the NHS Breast Screening Programme is that it is a mobile single-sex service. Due to the nature of the role, there is a genuine occupational qualification for the post holder to be female as an exception to the Equality Act 2010.
