About this role
The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geotechnologies IEG conducts applied research in integrated energy infrastructures, geothermal energy and sector coupling. Our research contributes to the development of innovative technologies and sustainable solutions for the energy transition. Understanding the mechanical behaviour and fracture processes of rocks is essential for the development of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) . Numerical simulations using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) help investigate rock deformation, fracture initiation and propagation under different geological and stress conditions.
In cooperation with Ruhr University Bochum (Institute for Structural Mechanics) , we are looking for two motivated student research assistants to support our research on DEM modelling and calibration of granite. Be part of change Depending on your interests and qualifications, you will contribute to one of the following research topics: Research Topic 1: Generalized DEM Calibration Strategy for Granite Development of granite mesostructure models considering mineral composition and microstructural heterogeneity Performance of numerical uniaxial compression and Brazilian tests Development and calibration of a generalized parameter strategy for microstructure-informed DEM models Validation of model transferability across different granite compositions Research Topic 2: DEM Modelling and Calibration of Granite under Triaxial Compression Development of simplified granite mesostructure models using random fields Performance of numerical triaxial compression tests under different confining pressures Conducting sensitivity analyses and calibrating numerical model parameters Validation of simulation results against independent experimental datasets What you contribute Current enrolment in a Master's degree programme in Civil Engineering, Subsurface Engineering, Computational Engineering, Geosciences or a related field Solid understanding of solid mechanics ; basic knowledge of fracture mechanics is an advantage Programming experience in Python and an interest in numerical modelling and simulation Ideally, initial experience with the Discrete Element Method (DEM) or other particle-based simulation methods Familiarity with Linux, high-performance computing (HPC) or rock mechanics is an advantage Independent, structured and analytical working style, with an interest in scientific research and interdisciplinary collaboration
