Job summary

The Royal Marsden is seeking an outstanding finance leader as Head of Financial Management to help shape the future of the management accounting and business partnering team. We are looking for an individual who can embrace and enhance the distinctive culture of this unique specialist Trust.

As The Royal Marsden faces growing demands, we need a finance professional who can lead the business partnering team to support the organisation to deliver financial sustainability and the financial strategy.

Main duties of the job

As Head of Financial Management, you will lead the Trust's business partners and deputise for the Director of Finance - Operations as required. You will be responsible for the development and delivery of the financial plan and ensuring this supports the organisation's strategic objectives. You will ensure the delivery of accurate, timely and high-quality financial information to internal and external stakeholders. You will play a central role in embedding a business-focused, high-performing financial management team that supports clinical and corporate decision-making and ensures financial rigour across all areas of the organisation.

Leadership

To contribute to the development of the vision and direction of the Financial Management Function so that it is able to set challenging objectives in line with the Trusts strategic direction for the future in response to changing needs To provide financial leadership, supporting key Trust strategic and operational priorities and service developments, engaging senior stakeholders and providing specialist/ in-depth financial advice and assurance to the Trust Board, Executive Team and other Senior Staff within Finance and across the Trust. Contribute to the formulation, review and implementation of a financial strategy for the Trust. To ensure that the service provided by the Financial Management Team meets the operational needs of the organisation, ensuring the postholder and the team builds and maintains a close working relationship with budget holders across the Trust. To drive through business improvements, standardisation and automation in the production of Trust-wide processes and reporting.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications Essential

CCAB-recognised accountancy qualification (or equivalent). Significant experience working at a senior management level within a finance function. Experience of operating at a strategic level, with the ability to understand, interpret and apply policy and organisational priorities. Demonstrable understanding of the NHS or similarly complex public sector environment, including its strategic direction and policy context.

Desirable

Postgraduate management qualification (e.g. MBA or equivalent).

Experience Essential

Proven analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and manage large volumes of complex financial and non-financial information and produce clear, evidence-based recommendations In-depth knowledge and experience of business planning, financial forecasting and management accounting within a large, complex organisation. Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles and their application in a governance and performance management context. Experience of working closely with operational teams to ensure financial services are aligned to organisational priorities and service delivery needs.

Desirable

Experience of resource planning, with the ability to assess time, capacity and financial requirements, make realistic assumptions and identify appropriate contingencies.

Skills, abilities and knowledge Essential

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex financial and technical issues clearly and effectively to a range of audiences. Ability to identify, assess and manage financial and operational risk, advising on appropriate and proportionate actions. Ability to influence and persuade senior stakeholders, including Executive Directors and clinicians, using evidence-based arguments while respecting differing perspectives. Demonstrates collaborative team working across finance and wider senior leadership teams. Ability to review policies, procedures and ways of working, identifying and implementing improvements where appropriate.

Other Requirements Essential

Ability to maintain effective performance and make sound judgements when working under pressure. Ability to travel between Trust sites as required for the role.
