Job summary
We are seeking to appoint a Breast Radiology Specialist Grade doctor to join our friendly Radiology Team at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. Bolton has recently been voted the best place to work in Greater Manchester in the national staff survey and we are proud of our fantastic team of staff.
Due to the increasing workload in our Bolton Breast Unit, we are looking to expand our clinical team and grow our services. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Applicants must have a basic medical qualification MBChB/MBBS or equivalent full registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical Council Obtained FRCR Part I and preparing for Part II.
Main duties of the job
A Specialist Grade doctor will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies set out by mutual agreement, providing direct clinical care and meeting service delivery and improvement requirements.
Bolton Breast Unit is located in the main hospital and is equipped with Mammography, Tomosynthesis, ultrasound and all relevant breast interventions including 7G VAE. We are in the process of setting up Contrast Enhanced Mammography.
The successful candidate will join our team and work in the screening assessment clinics and symptomatic new patient clinics. You will attend and present in the Breast multidisciplinary meetings. Bolton Breast Unit actively participates in training and we regularly have Breast registrars, trainee mammographers and medical students.
The Breast radiology commitment will include screening film reading, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and CT work. Other subspecialty interests will be accommodated within the job plan. A full-time contract will include 2 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Supporting Professional Activities and 1 PA for 7 day working (1 in 16 joining the Registrar on-call rota).
Upon taking up the post, the successful candidate will agree a job plan and work programme; the actual timetable is open to negotiation and will be decided by mutual agreement. A commitment to working flexibly within the 7-day service will be expected.

RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Radiology and Breast Imaging forms part of the Diagnostic and Support Services Division alongside laboratory medicine, Pharmacy and outpatient services. The specialty structure consists of a Clinical Lead (Consultant Radiologist), Operational Business manager and Lead Radiographers/ Sonographers. This structure is reflected at all levels within the organisation. The leadership unit functions together as a cohesive unit to set the tone for each specialty and is jointly responsible for Quality, performance, finance and workforce.
The speciality is governed by the Radiology Board, which is chaired by the Radiology Clinical Lead. We also hold Radiology Governance meetings and Radiology consultants meeting chaired by the Governance and Clinical Lead respectively.
FACILITIES WITHIN RADIOLOGY
The department is split across five main areas of the hospital site:
The Main F Block Radiology department is co-located next door to the Emergency Department and is central within the hospital.
A Block, Minerva road, which includes MRI and Nuclear Medicine.

J Block Community Diagnostic Centre the ground floor includes a brand new imaging department (opened March 2024) with additional CT, MRI, ultrasound and x-ray facilities operated by Bolton FT.
There are also a number of satellite services based at Bolton One, Nye Bevan and Radcliffe Primary care centre.
EQUIPMENT
Our equipment is predominantly managed under a Managed Equipment Service contract that provides an ongoing programme of equipment maintenance and replacement with the latest technology.
We have recently replaced our PACS system with the GM wide Sectra PACS system
WORKLOAD
This is a busy department, which receives requests from the Royal Bolton Hospital, community services, local GPs and other private and NHS providers in Bolton. Services are delivered mainly
from the Royal Bolton site with the main department co-located next door to the Emergency Department. A comprehensive range of examinations and interventional procedures are undertaken including CT, MRI, X-Ray, Fluoroscopy, Interventional, Nuclear Medicine, Breast Imaging, and Ultrasound.
JUNIOR STAFF
Specialty trainees in Radiology rotate to Bolton from the North West School of Radiology. There are a total of 7 specialty trainees attached to the main department at any one time, usually for six-month duration (1x ST1, 2x ST2 (general and paediatrics or Breast), 2x ST3/4 (general) and 2x ST4/5 with a subspecialty interest). Since becoming a training centre in 1996, Bolton has proved to be a very popular placement with trainees of all levels of experience.
SKILL MIX
The department is keen to enhance the role of non-medical staff where appropriate. Radiographic staff have duties in the following areas:
Intravenous injection of contrast medium, radio-pharmaceuticals and muscle relaxant
GI Specialist radiographers for CT Colonography and fluoroscopy
Obstetric, abdominal and pelvic ultrasound and Hycosy service.
Radiographer Chest and MSK reporting including ED MSK hot reporting
CT Head reporting
MR MSK reporting.
There are plans to further expand the volume and range of plain film reporting by radiographers. Assistant Practitioners perform plain radiography in the main Radiology department.
Bolton Breast Unit was one of the four national pilot sites to extend skill mix in the Breast Screening Programme, and now employs five associate practitioner mammographers. The department has recently expanded the scope of advanced practice throughout the breast unit and now has a Consultant Mammographer in addition to Advanced and Enhanced Practitioners.
OFFICE, SECRETARIAL & CLERICAL FACILITIES
Office accommodation will be provided with shared secretarial support. Email and internet access will be provided together with access to PACS workstation for on-site reporting.
7 DAY WORKING
The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the 7-day working rota, which is currently 1 in 16, joining the Registrar rota. Candidates are expected to cover 1 evening every 4 weeks 5pm 7pm and 1 weekend in 16 (Friday 5-7pm, Sat and Sunday 9am-6pm). An outside agency provides an on-call service from 7pm (6pm at weekends). Availability for an on-call service in event of a failure of this service would be expected or in a Major incident.
TEACHING
The successful candidate will be expected to share in the training of the junior Specialty trainees in Radiology as appropriate. Some teaching of non-radiology junior staff and nursing and paramedical staff will be expected.
CLINICAL MEETINGS
Attendance at Cancer multidisciplinary team meetings as appropriate to speciality and sector MDT meetings will be required.
CPD / POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION
The Trust has a very well equipped multidisciplinary Education Centre and all specialist doctors are eligible for CPD - there is a budget managed by the Postgraduate Tutor.
The Education Centre has seminar rooms, discussion rooms and tiered lecture theatre for 120 people and a well-stocked library with access to Medline.
Several regional radiologists meetings are held per year, rotating through the hospitals of the region.
The Manchester Medical Society holds 7 academic evening lectures through the academic year in the Manchester Medical School.
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND AUDIT
The Trust has a Clinical Governance Committee chaired by the Medical Director. The Radiology Directorate has established a Clinical Governance Structure. All categories of Directorate Staff are represented in the structure, and there is liaison with other clinical groups where required. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Directorate Clinical Audit Programme, which will be closely linked to the needs of Clinical Governance. The lead radiologist for audit is Dr Koay. Dr Razzaq is lead radiologist for governance in the department.
RESEARCH
The Trust has a Research and Development Committee to develop local R&D strategy. An interest in research will be welcomed and specialist doctors are encouraged to get involved in research and publications. Limited funding for research projects is available from time to time
