Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Neonatal nurse looking to progress their career. As a band 6 sister/charge nurse you will be responsible for supporting the senior sister and developing our Special Care Neonatal Unit and Transitional Care services at the James Paget Hospital. The Trust is progressive and innovative whilst being committed to supporting the needs of the service, listening to feedback and developing a specialist Neonatal workforce. We are looking for an experienced, forward thinking practitioner who has excellent IT skills and good understanding of the BadgerNet system in order to monitor and maintain compliance with the National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP) and other data collection needs. You will be highly motivated, well organised, and flexible individual who can influence practice and deliver a high quality service, helping us to achieve Bliss and Baby Friendly accreditations.

You will be responsible for demonstrating excellent clinical outcomes, safe and effective delivery of care for the neonate and their family. You will need to be committed to improving their experience during the first hours of care linking in with the Paediatric services, implementing Trust policies and procedures, be able to act promptly on concerns and to communicate effectively and share information appropriately within a multi-agency context where collaborative working is key.

Main duties of the job

Confidently and competently lead nursing care for sick neonates. Exercising leadership within the unit in the absence of the senior sister/charge nurse, to attend meetings, as delegated in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse. Supervising the professional work of the nursing staff and monitoring of the same, to participate in the appraisal of staff. Monitoring and supporting compliance to the neonatal national audit programme Creating the correct environmental atmosphere within which babies are cared for. Improving service delivery to parents and monitoring their satisfaction and needs. Co-ordinating off-duty to provide adequate skill mix and taking appropriate action when short falls occur. Promote and support divisional policy on annual leave, sickness and e-roster. Assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in organisational responsibilities, mandatory training and record accordingly. Maintain safe custody of drugs and ensure that legal requirements and hospital rules regarding their administration are observed. Ensure equipment is in a safe working order and document accordingly. Enforce the uniform policy in full. To ensure documentation is completed in a clear and concise manner in accordance with NMC and trust guidelines. Participate in and promote the assessment and achievement of the Bliss Accreditation and UNICEF Baby Friendly Accreditation.

You will also play a large role in developing and supporting the workforce of the Neonatal Team, linking with the Clinical Educators, Risk and Governance Lead and Feeding and Fi Care Lead and participating in staff recruitment process.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Neonatal QIS with 2 years post qualification experience

Desirable

Leadership/Management qualification

Qualifications Essential

Registered NMC Nurse/Midwife

Knowledge and Experience Essential

Evidence of knowledge of key Neonatal recommendations and issues.

Desirable

Evidence of QI or change work on previous roles.
