Job summary
Barrington Medical Centre is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and reliable Phlebotomist to join our friendly and supportive practice team.
This is a part-time permanent position for 9 hours per week, to be worked across Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:00am until 12:30pm.
There may be some flexibility to vary the start time slightly earlier to support service needs; however, the sessions would not routinely commence later than the advertised times due to collection times.
The role is an important part of the day-to-day running of the practice, helping patients access timely blood testing in a professional, safe and reassuring environment. We are looking for somebody who is approachable, organised and able to work confidently both independently and as part of a wider clinical team.
The successful candidate will work closely with the nursing and administrative teams to support chronic disease monitoring, routine investigations and wider patient care across the practice.
Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities of the role include:
Performing venepuncture safely and in line with practice protocolsConfirming patient identity and obtaining consent prior to proceduresCorrect labelling, handling and storage of samplesEnsuring specimens are prepared and sent to the laboratory appropriatelyMaintaining accurate clinical recordsManaging appointment flow effectively and maintaining good patient experienceSupporting infection prevention and control proceduresWorking collaboratively with the wider clinical and administrative teamEscalating any clinical concerns appropriatelyThe postholder may also be asked to support wider practice activity including audits, quality improvement work and service development where appropriate.

The core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist are as follows. From time to time there may be a requirement to undertake other duties appropriate to the role and within the scope of the postholders competence.
Obtaining patient consent prior to the collection of blood samplesPerforming venepuncture safely and in accordance with practice protocols and infection prevention standardsEnsuring patients are treated in a professional, reassuring and compassionate mannerCorrect labelling, handling, storage and packaging of specimensEnsuring samples are processed and sent to the laboratory within required timescalesMaintaining accurate clinical records and documenting procedures appropriately within the clinical systemUsing the specimen log effectively and resolving any discrepancies identifiedMaintaining effective communication with laboratory staff where requiredEscalating any clinical concerns or difficulties appropriately to the nursing or GP teamWorking collaboratively with the wider clinical and administrative team to support patient care and service deliverySupporting effective clinic flow and maintaining a safe and tidy clinical environmentUndertaking opening and closing procedures in line with practice protocols and rotasIn addition to the core responsibilities, the postholder may also be requested to:
Participate in audit and quality improvement work as directedSupport local initiatives to improve patient care and service deliveryParticipate in shared learning and team development activitiesUndertake mandatory training and maintain professional competencies relevant to the role

Experience Essential
Previous experience working as a Phlebotomist Ability to record clinical notes Clear, polite telephone manner Competent in the use of Office and Outlook Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure Effective time management Good communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Good organisational and time management skills Understanding of infection prevention and control Basic IT skills and ability to maintain accurate records

Educated to GCSE level or equivalent Qualification in Venepuncture Training in Infection Prevention & Control
