University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) is looking to recruit an Associate Non-Executive Director. This is an exceptional opportunity to share your talents and expertise to make a positive difference to the lives of people served by the Trust.
The Associate Non-Executive Director (ANED) will support the Trust Board in providing effective leadership, scrutiny and governance to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe and sustainable healthcare services. Working alongside Non-Executive Directors and Executive colleagues, the postholder will contribute to shaping organisational strategy, overseeing performance, and promoting a culture aligned with NHS values of compassion, equality, and excellence.
The role includes participation in Board and committee meetings, offering independent judgement and constructive challenge to support decision-making and continuous improvement.
The ANED will help ensure strong governance, accountability, and assurance frameworks are maintained, with a focus on patient outcomes, safety, and experience.
The postholder will champion partnership working with system stakeholders, staff, patients and local communities, supporting collaboration across health and care systems to reduce inequalities and improve population health.
Main duties of the job
Provide effective contribution at Trust Board level, offering independent scrutiny, professional insight and constructive challenge to support robust, evidence-based decision-making and ensure high standards of governance. Support the development, oversight and delivery of the Trust's strategic objectives, ensuring alignment with NHS priorities, improved patient outcomes, service quality, safety and long-term sustainability. Participate actively in Board committees and decision-making forums, ensuring appropriate systems of assurance, risk management and internal control are in place and operating effectively. Promote a culture consistent with NHS values, demonstrating leadership in equality, diversity and inclusion, and supporting a compassionate, respectful and high-performing organisational environment. Contribute to monitoring organisational performance across quality, finance and workforce, ensuring continuous improvement and innovation in service delivery. Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including patients, staff, partners and system organisations, to enhance collaboration and integrated care. Ensure compliance with the highest standards of public life, maintaining integrity, accountability and transparency in all aspects of the role.

The Associate Non-Executive Director (ANED) will support the Trust Board in delivering its statutory duties by contributing to the overall leadership, strategic direction and governance of the organisation. The postholder will work collaboratively with Executive and Non-Executive Directors to ensure the Trust provides safe, effective, high-quality care and delivers continuous improvement in patient outcomes and experience.
The ANED will participate fully in Board and committee meetings, bringing independent judgement, insight and constructive challenge to discussions and decisions. The role includes supporting the development and implementation of the Trusts long-term strategy, ensuring alignment with NHS priorities, regulatory requirements and the needs of local populations.
A key responsibility is to promote strong systems of governance, assurance and accountability, ensuring that risks are identified, managed and mitigated effectively. The postholder will contribute to oversight of performance across quality, finance and workforce, ensuring sustainable and efficient use of resources.
The ANED will champion NHS values and behaviours, supporting a compassionate, inclusive and just culture that values diversity, reduces inequalities and promotes staff wellbeing and engagement. The role also involves developing effective relationships with patients, staff, partners and local communities to strengthen collaboration and integrated care.
