Job description

Job responsibilities

The Emergency Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary is one of the largest and busiest in the UK, delivering high-quality emergency care to a diverse patient population while maintaining strong standards of clinical performance. As part of our ambitious vision, we are committed to becoming one of the country's leading providers of acute and emergency care over the coming years.

This is an exciting time to join our team. We have recently opened a state-of-the-art Emergency Care environment that brings together the Emergency Department and Admissions Services into a single, integrated patient pathway. The facility includes dedicated areas for initial assessment, minor injuries and illnesses, majors, resuscitation, as well as specialist units including the Acute Medical Unit, Acute Care Bay, Emergency Frailty Unit, Acute Frailty Unit and Emergency Decisions Unit. This modern clinical environment provides excellent opportunities to gain experience across the full spectrum of emergency and acute care.

We are passionate about supporting the growth and development of our clinicians. Our dedicated Education Team, led by a Consultant Educator and supported by senior registrars and administrative staff, is focused on delivering high-quality teaching, training and career development opportunities.

As a Senior Trust Grade Doctor, you will have access to a comprehensive educational programme, including:

  • Regular Case-Based Discussion (CBD) sessions with senior clinicians.
  • High-fidelity simulation training within our dedicated in-house simulation suite.
  • Practical skills sessions designed to support competency development.
  • A structured teaching programme tailored specifically for Trust Grade doctors.
  • Opportunities to present clinical cases, gain workplace-based assessments and evidence competencies for portfolio development.

This is more than a traditional Emergency Medicine post. It offers a unique opportunity to combine frontline Emergency Department experience with hands-on pre-hospital and community emergency care. You'll be at the forefront of a rapidly developing specialty, working autonomously, developing leadership skills, and helping to shape the future of Community Emergency Medicine while making a real difference to patients beyond the walls of the hospital.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver innovative, community-based emergency care as part of a dynamic Doctor and Paramedic Response Team, bringing urgent medical expertise directly to patients.
  • Play a key role in providing a 24-hour Emergency Medicine service within a busy and forward-thinking Emergency Department, working alongside senior clinicians and Emergency Medicine Consultants.
  • Lead the assessment, management and ongoing care planning for patients in the community, collaborating closely with primary care, community services and multidisciplinary teams to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Provide clinical leadership, support and mentorship to paramedics and allied health professionals working in pre-hospital and community settings.
  • Develop advanced decision-making skills in complex and challenging environments, delivering high-quality emergency care where it is needed most.

General Responsibilities

  • Be an ambassador for our Trust values, helping to deliver exceptional patient care while contributing to a positive and supportive working culture.
  • Practice to the highest professional standards, in line with the General Medical Council (GMC) Good Medical Practice guidance.
