About this role

Do you take pride in creating safe, welcoming spaces where young people can flourish and succeed?

Are you practical, proactive and committed to maintaining high standards? If so, we would love to hear from you.

At St John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy, we are proud to be a vibrant and successful Catholic secondary school at the heart of our community. With a strong reputation for excellence, high expectations and a commitment to nurturing the whole person, we strive to ensure that every student is supported to achieve their full potential academically, socially and spiritually.

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Premises Officer to join our Premises Team and play a vital role in maintaining safe, secure and inspiring learning environments across our local family of schools. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys variety in their work, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and values building positive relationships across a school community.

A Unique and Varied Role

Unlike traditional site-based positions, this role forms part of a regional premises team supporting a group of academies within the Trust. The successful candidate will work primarily across a local cluster of schools, typically including St John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy and a number of nearby primary academies, helping to ensure consistently high standards across all sites.

While your day-to-day work will be focused within this local area, there may be occasional opportunities to support other schools across the Trust when required.

This collaborative approach offers

  • A varied and rewarding working environment across multiple school settings.
  • The opportunity to build strong relationships with colleagues and school communities.
  • The chance to share expertise and learn from experienced premises professionals.
  • A supportive team structure that encourages collaboration and problem-solving.
  • The opportunity to make a wider impact across a family of Catholic schools.

What You'll Be Doing

As Premises Officer, you will help maintain and develop our school sites, ensuring they remain safe, secure and welcoming environments for pupils, staff and visitors.

Maintaining Our School Environments

  • Carrying out routine maintenance, repairs and inspections across academy sites.
  • Ensuring buildings, grounds and facilities remain safe, clean and well-presented.
  • Identifying maintenance issues and coordinating specialist support where required.

Supporting a Safe and Compliant Estate

  • Undertaking regular health and safety inspections and checks.
  • Supporting compliance with statutory requirements, Trust policies and academy procedures.
  • Responding promptly to hazards, defects and maintenance concerns.

Supporting School Operations

  • Managing site security, including opening and closing procedures where required.
  • Liaising with contractors and monitoring work carried out on site.
  • Maintaining accurate premises, compliance and maintenance records.
  • Providing operational support for academy events, activities and lettings.

Driving Sustainability and Efficiency

  • Monitoring heating, lighting and building systems.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Helping create comfortable and effective learning environments for students and staff.

Working as Part of a Dedicated Team

  • Collaborating with academy staff, Trust colleagues and external contractors.
  • Sharing best practice across schools and supporting colleagues within the regional premises team.
  • Responding flexibly to the needs of both the local school cluster and the wider Trust.
  • Supporting the academy's commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Why Join St John Houghton and St Ralph Sherwin?

As part of our Trust family, you will not only contribute to the success of St John Houghton but also help support the wider mission of improving life chances for children and young people across our schools. You'll benefit from a supportive team culture, opportunities for professional development, and the satisfaction of seeing the direct impact your work has on pupils every day.
