About this role

Job Description

The WCO group supports the research labs in Munhall, PA and Troy, MI. It runs the WCO operations platform and the labs’ ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, and it manages the Knowledge Resource Center (the research library). Several tools in WCO only pay off when they hold complete, current data, and right now some of them don’t. This intern will close that gap. You will work with lab staff to collect and organize the data, enter it into our systems, and improve the processes that keep it current.

What you’ll do

Lab equipment and skills data

  • Work with lab leads and technicians to inventory lab equipment and collect its status, maintenance, calibration and documentation records. Enter this data into the WCO Equipment Dashboard.
  • Work with lab managers to define the skills each lab needs, the goals for each skill and each employee’s current level. Populate this in the WCO Skills Matrix.
  • Make sure the collected data supports the group’s ISO/IEC 17025 requirements for personnel competence and equipment records.
  • Map how the data is gathered and kept up to date today, find where it breaks down, and recommend and pilot simpler, repeatable processes using Lean and continuous-improvement methods.
  • Write short how-to guides and train lab users so the data stays current after the internship ends.

Research library cataloging with AI

  • Use AI tools (Claude) to catalog the Knowledge Resource Center’s physical and digitized holdings (technical reports, journals, microfilm archives) into a consistent, searchable digital catalog.
  • Define and apply a standard set of catalog fields (title, author, date, report number, subject, location, etc.). Spot-check the AI’s output for accuracy.
  • Flag items that cannot be shared with AI tools because of copyright or licensing.
  • Work with the Software Engineering intern and the WCO team so the catalog can be searched by AI research tools.

What we’re looking for

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Process, Engineering Management, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with data.
  • Comfortable working face-to-face with lab staff and asking questions to get accurate information.
  • Proficient with Excel.
  • Comfortable learning new software and AI tools.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.

Preferred

  • Coursework or experience in Lean, Six Sigma, process improvement or quality systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 / ISO/IEC 17025, calibration or maintenance programs.
  • Lab, manufacturing or industrial internship experience.
  • Basic SQL, Power BI, or data-cleaning experience.
  • Interest in library science, information management or research data.
