Job summary Specialty Doctor in the department of Genomic Medicine
We are pleased to advertise an exciting new post for a Specialty Doctor in Genomic Medicine. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join our experienced Clinical Genetics team in the Leeds Clinical Genomics Service (LCGS) based at Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a one year fixed-term post ideally starting on 5th August 2026. This is a full-time post (10 programmed activities), but we will consider candidates who wish to work less than full time.
The post is suitable for doctors with prior experience of working in the NHS. Candidates will have at least four years full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), with at least two years being in Clinical Genetics.
You will work and contribute to the running of a busy Clinical Genetics department. You will be actively involved in clinics, MDTs, acute ward referrals and teaching. You will be part of a team with our training resident doctors and clinical fellows. You will be supported and supervised by the consultant team. You will also work closely within our wider team: genetic counsellors, genomic practitioners, GPs with extended roles in genomics, administrative and lab colleagues.
Main duties of the job The successful candidate will specifically play a pivotal role in delivering equitable, culturally competent genetic services across our diverse regional population, with a particular focus on Bradford. Working alongside established multidisciplinary teams and community representatives, this post offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative, community-engaged genomic care in areas with a higher prevalence of autosomal recessive conditions, shaped by complex socio-cultural, linguistic, and religious factors. This role is ideal for a clinician passionate about reducing health inequalities, improving genomic literacy, and advancing personalised care through meaningful engagement with underrepresented and underserved populations.
This is a new role for LCGS, and the intention is that this fixed term appointment will allow an assessment of the utility of the post within the service with the intention of generating a substantive post. Training will be provided to facilitate career progression.

Why you should join our Team The Leeds Clinical Genomics Service (LCGS) provides Clinical Genetics and Genomics services to a diverse population of c.4 million across a large, varied geographical area. The service comprises an experienced team of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Genomic Practitioners and Genetic Research Nurses/Practitioners, as well as Specialty Trainees, Clinical Fellows and trainee Genetic Counsellors, supported by a large clinical administrative team. LCGS is a member of the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service (NEY GMS), and the service works closely with the Regional Clinical Genetics services based in Newcastle and Sheffield.
LCGS is based at Leeds General Infirmary in Leeds, with the Central Lab of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) situated at the nearby St. James’s University Hospital. Genetics clinics are held in the Leeds hospitals, a satellite unit in Hull and virtually. Part of this role may involve establishing clinics in other parts of our region for specific populations. In addition to providing general and specialist genetics clinics, LCGS contributes to a variety of multidisciplinary teams including oncology, fetal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology and musculoskeletal services.

What you will bring to the role The Specialty Doctor will be expected to hold clinics under supervision. They will also attend and contribute to departmental meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings and teaching sessions. The role will also include supporting the consultants in their delivery of excellent clinical care.
Building on LCGS’s pioneering role in leading and delivering culturally competent genomic care, a specific area of focus for this role would be to enhance and progress service development and delivery in this area as a medical lead with support of the consultant and culturally competent genomic team. This role is central to further advancing culturally competent genomic practice in the context of rapidly evolving genomic technologies to enable earlier and more accurate diagnoses, improved risk stratification, and more personalised treatment pathways.
This post offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative, community-engaged genomic care in Bradford which has a higher prevalence of autosomal recessive conditions, shaped by complex socio-cultural, linguistic, and religious factors. The successful candidate will work closely with our established multidisciplinary teams, including the renowned Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and in strong partnership with Public health colleagues to support population-level approaches to prevention, early identification, and community engagement. Working alongside community leaders and religious scholars, the postholder will co-develop and deliver sensitive, accessible, and inclusive genetic services.
The post will give the Specialty Doctor a wide breadth of experience and a bespoke training programme will be developed to support the doctor’s clinical and personal development. This can be tailored to the successful candidate’s clinical interests and service needs. In addition to clinical experience this may include active participation in audit, quality improvement projects, teaching, delivering national presentations and clinical research.
The hours are standard working hours of 9-5pm Monday to Friday. Due to clinic and MDT commitments occasional days may require a 8am start time. The role may include attending clinics in Hull or other peripheral centres occasionally (1-4 times per month). These working days may be longer due to travel.
The post duties may include a combination of the following. The post holder may not be required to carry out all the duties listed. This will depend upon the requirements of the service.
Support consultant clinical activity. Hold outpatient, telephone and video clinics. Participate in the urgent work and ward referral rota. Write and sign-off clinic letters promptly. Attend all stipulated departmental meetings Support multidisciplinary team meetings Undertake audit or quality improvement projects Teach medical students and other medical or allied health professionals as directed. Attend specialist clinics, departmental teaching activities including genomics education and other relevant clinical meetings. Attend induction and comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave. Maintain continued professional development. Develop services to enhance culturally competent care across the region and support the activity of the NHSE-funded Genomic Practitioner in relation to the Genetic Risk Equity Project.
