As a colorectal cancer surgeon you would support our existing general surgical unit. This is an exciting opportunity either for a newly qualified, forward thinking, enthusiastic colorectal consultant or an experienced consultant who wants a new beginning with a better work life balance.
We provide a robust emergency and planned surgical service for the island population and this posts will be part of this plan with inclusion in the emergency general surgery on-call provision. The post is based at St. Mary's Hospitals, Newport, Isle of Wight.
Our population is small (145000) and we are one of the smallest district hospitals in England. This provides challenges and opportunities. We are an isolated Island community yet only 2 hours from London!
You will be offering core general surgical skills to ensure our surgical take is offering a truly excellent consultant delivered service.

We have formed a group model with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. This enables us to be part of their colorectal cancer MDT and currently refer low rectal cancers for Robotic rectal resections, early rectal cancers for Robotic TEMS, young right colon cancers for Robotic CME, selected locally advanced rectal cancers for Robotic exenteration procedures and other procedures like Robotic LPLND and para-aortic lymph node dissection. There may be opportunities in the future for successful candidates to be able to be mentored in such procedures and share joint operation at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
Job description Job responsibilities
The provisional timetable represents a job plan consisting of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. The job plan is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of the consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.
In addition it will include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
The job plan, for 10 PAs will commence including 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities [SPA]. After six months in post the SPA allocation will be reviewed with the post holder and any necessary adjustments will be made with a maximum of 2.5 SPAs. It is expected that more direct clinical care (DCC) sessions in theatre or clinic would be available if required.
Current on call commitments are based around a 1:7 provision.

Qualifications Essential
MBBS or equivalent Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery; CESR or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration or within 6 months of the receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview

Experience & Clinical Skills Essential
ATLS Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in colorectal, general and laparoscopic surgery Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
