Job summary
The Acute Medicine Department at Prince Philip Hospital is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated consultant in Acute and General Medicine. The post is substantive and is full time. This is a new post, joining colleagues in a dynamic and forward-looking department to develop a comprehensive 7-day Acute Medicine service across Prince Philip Hospital and the wider Health Board.
The successful candidate will lead on the medical assessment and treatment of "front door" patients, including the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) medical patients and the provision of "hot" specialty clinics. They will also be involved in the development and strategy of the new Urgent Care Centre.
We seek a colleague interested in Acute Medicine as their primary commitment but will support candidates wanting to continue clinical interests or work in liaison roles with other medical specialties.
The post is primarily based at Prince Philip Hospital, in Llanelli with the opportunity to work closely with colleagues from across Hywel Dda University Health Board.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide with other consultant colleagues a service in Acute Medicine to oversee medical patient care within AMAU and Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) on a rotational basis as well as supporting the development of sub-speciality interest if applicable. There is also an expectation to participate in the medical on-call rota at Prince Philip Hospital on a 1:11 basis.

The RoleAs a Consultant, you will be a senior clinical decision maker at the hospital front door, leading the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute medical patients across: The 24 bedded Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU) Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) Hot specialty clinics, supporting admission avoidance and rapid follow up
You will play a key role in the development of a new Urgent Care Centre, planned to open in 2026, and contribute to delivering a comprehensive 7 day Acute Medicine service across Prince Philip Hospital and the wider Health Board.
Clinical Environment and SupportYou will work within a supportive and developing Acute Medicine service, benefiting from: Participation in a well supported 1:11 medical on call rota Resident doctor support including Foundation doctors, IMT/Clinical Fellows and Senior Clinical Fellows Modern diagnostics including CT, MRI, ultrasound and angiography Dedicated office space and administrative support
There is also flexibility to pursue or develop sub specialty or liaison interests, including: Cardiology, Respiratory or Renal Medicine Geriatric Medicine Stroke or Neurology Acute Oncology or Haematology Endocrinology
These interests can be incorporated through job planning and service development discussions.
Teaching, Leadership and Career DevelopmentEducation and leadership are integral to the role. Responsibilities include: Teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate trainees Acting as an Educational Supervisor Leading and contributing to clinical audit and quality improvement Promoting evidence based practice and patient safety
Newly appointed senior doctors may also access Hywel Ddas Consultant Development and Mentoring Programme, offering executive coaching, leadership training and mentorship aligned to the NHS Medical Leadership Competency Framework.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge Essential
Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council. On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date. Valid Certified Advanced Life Support. Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.
