Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is seeking an exceptional senior clinical leader to join our Medical Directorate team as Deputy Medical Director. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced Consultant, SAS doctor or salaried GP to influence strategy, quality and culture at scale. In NHS England this position may be advertised as a Deputy Chief Medical Officer.
We are looking for a values-led, collaborative and credible medical leader who can operate confidently at Executive level, thrive in complex environments and inspire clinical engagement. You will deputise for the Executive Medical Director, lead key medical portfolios, support Care Group Medical Directors and champion quality, patient safety, workforce wellbeing and professional standards.

You will work within a strong, inclusive Medical Directorate providing support and guidance to Assistant Medical Directors and future clinical leader. Main duties of the job
As Deputy Medical Director, you will work in close partnership with the Executive Medical Director and executive colleagues to provide senior medical leadership across Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. You will deputise for the Executive Medical Director at Board, executive and governance meetings and lead agreed medical portfolios, including Deputy Responsible Officer responsibilities.
The role involves providing professional leadership and support to Care Group Medical Directors and Assistant Medical Directors, including oversight of job planning, development and performance, and strengthening medical engagement across acute and community services. You will play a central role in quality, safety and governance, contributing to the management of complaints, serious incidents, coronial and Ombudsman matters, and ensuring learning, assurance and continuous improvement are embedded across the organisation.
You will act as a visible leader for the medical workforce, championing wellbeing, professional standards and inclusive leadership, and supporting culture change across services. Working closely with nursing, AHP, public health and operational colleagues, you will help drive service improvement, support strategic priorities and ensure delivery of high-quality care within financial and operational frameworks.

Qualifications and/or knowledge Essential
Full GMC/GDC Registration with a licence to practice Higher qualification in general practice or CCT Evidence of continuing professional development Evidence of continued managerial professional development including regular attendance on internal and external study programmes Extensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of a range of issues across the NHS and NHS patient agenda. Up to date knowledge of national and local agendas, standards, targets and priorities related to medical education and healthcare.

Experience of relevant national/regional roles Experience in developing policy /strategy.
Experience Essential
Experience working in a senior clinical leadership position Senior experience of leading teams, supporting and developing staff members, and actively managing poor performance in accordance with the values of the UHB. Excellent Leadership skills and experience of managing staff Experience of providing services to a high quality with restricted resources. Experience of clinical governance Experience of implementing change management projects to develop or improve services. Acted in a Senior Leadership position previously.

Aptitude and Abilities Essential
Ability to lead the strategic development of a business or Service Group. Proven conceptual and analytical skills. Strong communication skills (written, oral, presentational and interpersonal). Able to multi-task and continue to function to a high standard when under pressure. Able to communicate well and liaise with people at all levels within and outside the UHB.
Desirable
Ability to speak Welsh IT literate (proficient in MS Office e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) with standard keyboard skills.

Ability to travel in a timely manner throughout the geographical area of Cwm Taf Morgannwg and across Wales. Able to work hours flexibly
