Job summary

Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care (Hospital)

Department of Palliative Medicine

Based at Barnet Hospital site

This post is one year fixed term maternity cover 37.5 hours per week, 9am-5pm, including weekends and bank holidays

Main duties of the job

The CNS contributes to the provision of specialist palliative care in the acute hospital setting for patients facing life-limiting illnesses (within the remit of the multi- disciplinary team) accepting patient referrals to agreed criteria and managing their own caseload with the support of the Lead Nurse and Consultant Nurse. They will provide advice, education and support to patients, their carers and other health and social care professionals. They will contribute to the development and smooth running of the service. The post holder will work to agreed professional, departmental and Trust boundaries as required to provide patient centred seamless care and will take part in the 7 day / week service for hospital patients at Barnet Hospital.

oRegistered Nurse oDegree in Palliative Care / Oncology / Critical Care / Long term condition / other relevant speciality oTeaching and Assessing qualification and / or extensive teaching experience oMasters Degree in relevant subject or willing to study to this Evidence of continuing professional development

Physical Assessment Course Non-Medical Nurse Prescribing Advanced Communication Skills Course Counselling Skills

Previous Experience Essential

oExperience as a senior nurse oExperience of caring for patients with advanced progressive illness oExperience of autonomous and multi-disciplinary working oExperience in oncology / long term condition / palliative care oExperience of mentorship Experience of working in a learning environment Experience of autonomous and multi-disciplinary working

Knowledge and Skills Essential

oAble to articulate understanding of specialist palliative care oAble to prioritise effectively oUnderstanding of and commitment to team working oAbility to be self-directional, manage own time and caseload oAble to articulate the assessment of psycho-social and spiritual needs Skills and knowledge in general palliative care Can demonstrate evidence of developing leadership skills Is able to communicate clearly, effectively and sensitively
