Job summary
We are seeking a dynamic individual to be a Trust Resident Doctor in Gastroenterology - Fixed term 6 months post from 01/09/2026- 28/02.2027.
It is a full time post with an on-call commitment to the general medical on call rota.
The post will be expected to be able to travel to all three Trust hospital Sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital).
Main duties of the job
Your role will involve providing comprehensive care for patients within the gastroenterology service, maintaining ongoing clinical responsibility and completing all associated administrative duties, including:
Managing gastroenterology inpatients, including ward rounds, reviewing new admissions, and responding to inpatient referrals across multiple wards.
Overseeing the day-to-day running of the gastroenterology ward in collaboration with Consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Conducting outpatient clinics (with consultant supervision)
Exercising independent clinical decision-making in the management of general medical and gastroenterological conditions.
Delivering evidence-based care and respond effectively to emergencies and unforeseen clinical situations.
Liaising with Consultants and other specialties to ensure coordinated and high-quality patient care.
Arranging and undertaking follow-up of discharged patients, including virtual clinics and review of investigation results.
Supervising and teaching other resident doctors, medical students, and clinical observers, including training in practical procedures such as ascitic taps/drains and lumbar punctures.
Participating in Clinical Governance meetings, audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

Key Responsibilities:
Conduct gastroenterology outpatient clinics

Person Specification
Education and qualifications: Essential
Full GMC registration MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
Desirable
Additional academic qualification eg BSc
Knowledge: Essential
Wide knowledge in adult general medicine
Desirable
Knowledge and understanding of GI disease in the in-pt and/or out patient setting
Experience: Essential
Wide experience in adult general medicine including on calls Enthusiasm for teaching An awareness of current speciality specific developments and initiatives

Experience of managing gastroenterology disorders in the in-patient and/or out patient setting Practical experience in gastroenterology eg ascitic drain insertion
