About this role

Job summary

Due to extensive growth within our faculty, we are currently recruiting Trust Grade Junior Clinical Fellow to work in the Medicine directorate at Basildon University Hospital and being a part of exciting MSE Trust. Successful individuals will undertake up to a 12-month rotational programme on two rotations of 6 months each. This gives you an amazing opportunity to take the medical experience gained into an environment where you can see a more specialist service in a bit more detail.

The post holder will have the opportunity to rotate through different teams within general medicine and specialty medicine such as Endocrine, Stroke, Respiratory, Palliative and elderly care. Individuals will get the chance to work on the acute medical take (as per rota) focusing on managing acutely unwell patients within the first 48 hours of admission, as well as then providing continued care if the patient requires a hospital stay of longer than 48 hours when they are transferred to the post-acute wards. This post would be suitable for any doctor who has successfully completed a 2-year Foundation School programme or has achieved equivalent competencies.

Main duties of the job

Initial clerking in the Acute Take, assessment, diagnosis and management of all patients admitted.

Ward rounds with relevant consultants and management of all patients on the wards, and any outlying wards.

Referral of patients to other specialities.

Appropriate discharge of patients after discussion with senior team members.

Performing bedside practical procedures e.g. venous blood sampling, ABGs, urine catheter insertion, LP etc

Gaining experience in the outpatient setting whenever appropriate under senior supervision.

Supervision and education of medical students (UCL and ARU students) and junior doctors using a combination of ward-based and classroom sessions.

Basildon & Thurrock Hospitals have received University Hospital designation for the close association with University College Medical School, for which it is one of the biggest undergraduate DGH sites. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates and will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills.

Hours of work are subject to the requirements of the service; alterations may have to be made to the rota, in advance or at short notice to cover sickness and absence of colleagues. All posts have a commitment to the out-of-hour shift rota for General Medicine, approximately 9 shifts per 11 weeks.
