About this role

Job summary

The role involves working with service users of Older People's Mental Health (OPMH) community mental health team (CMHT) in Basingstoke, providing psychological assessments and therapy. This will include working with functional/mental health and organic presentations including neuropsychological assessments. This includes work with wider team colleagues, carers and families and collaboration with appropriate community services and voluntary sector organisations.

It will require you to work as an autonomous, independent practitioner responsible for own work and intervention and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies in providing a highly specialist Psychological Therapies Service. You will also undertake complex assessments and consultancy, providing expert advice to Psychological Therapies Services colleagues and the wider clinical multi-professional team. You will provide specialist treatment for complex cases and plan and prioritise own clinical workload. There will be opportunities to propose and influence change to policy or service development within the area psychological service and CMHT. You will provide specialist supervision for trainee psychologists and CAPs and psychological guidance and supervision for multi-professional clinical colleagues. We support undertaking research and development and develop and encourage a research culture within the wider clinical team, including utilising research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.

Main duties of the job

*To provide comprehensive highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations and treatments of clients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of highly complex, contentious and/or sensitive data from a variety of sources including neuropsychological tests, psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care and specific to their care settings.

* To administer a wide range of highly complex neuropsychological tests that require the manipulation of materials at a high level of speed and accuracy.

*To be responsible for implementing a range of highly specialist evidence based psychological interventions for individual clients, carers, families and groups within and across teams, individually and in synthesis and includes skills for adapting therapies for patients with cognitive impairment.

*To work as an autonomous professional and provide highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients' formulation, diagnosis and treatment care plans and undertake risk assessment and risk management for clients.

*Receive regular supervision in accordance with good practice guidelines, maintain own CPD and provide supervision to junior staff.

*To represent Psychological Services at multidisciplinary meetings as required, and provide highly specialist advice.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

DClinPsy or DCounsPsy including, specifically, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS. HCPC Registration

Desirable

Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience Essential

In depth experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings. In depth experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Demonstrate further specialist training/experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision of working as an applied psychologist. Experience of working within a Community Mental Health Team or inpatient service within the NHS. Knowledge and Skills Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS. Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology. Other Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings. Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour. Demonstrate an understanding of, and a commitment to the principles of recovery, choice and personalisation. Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes. Personal An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact compassionately with people with severe mental health problems and organic conditions and their families/carers. Ability to work independently, reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals. Physical Attributes Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post. A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).

Desirable

Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision. Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts. Experience of older peoples mental health. Experience of working with people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia or other presentations. Experience of working with carers. Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. complex emotional needs, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities, psychosis etc.) as well as dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions. High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies. Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health. Experience of working within a multicultural framework. An interest in working with older people with severe mental health problems and people living with dementia.
