Job summary

Imperial College Health NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for applicants to apply the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Pelvic Uro-Oncology. This Fellowship will be for a fixed term period of 12 months to commence in October 2026. The fellowship represents an excellent opportunity for a senior trainee who wishes a to embark on a career in robotic urinary upper tract surgery.

The post is based in the Imperial College Urology Department at the Charing Cross Hospital, one of the largest renal cancer units in the UK. The Fellowship will involve exposure to all elements of renal cancer management including clinic, MDT and substantial operative experience. We undertake close to 250 upper tract procedures per year ranging from robotic partial nephrectomy to open caval thrombectomy on cardiopulmonary bypass.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will form an integral part of the urology team focused on the management of renal cancer. Surgical experience will include exposure to robotic partial and radical nephrectomy, in addition to complex open upper tract surgery including level IV caval thrombectomy. There will also be exposure to robotic prostatectomy, benign upper tract robotic surgery, including robotic pyeloplasty. In addition, they will have exposure to a dedicated renal cancer surgical clinic and MDT. During their time in the urology department, the post holder can expect to improve their clinical and surgical skills in renal cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The post holder will attend the specialist MDT for renal cancer and will be part of the post-MDT outpatient clinics.

The post holder will be expected to take an active role in managing patient pathways, this will include undertaking regular clinics.

The post holder will have the opportunity to complete at least one research project and write a minimum of one peer reviewed publication.

The post holder will help to train junior specialist trainees and to actively contribute to fortnightly departmental education meetings.

The post holder will provide high quality care to patients in urology.

The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC registration.

To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.

To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care activities.

To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

To take an active role in managing patient pathways in their respective area.

To undertake administrative duties associated with their patients in line with departmental guidelines.

To support with the training of junior specialist trainees and other junior doctors in the Urology department.

To oversee the appropriate booking of renal cancer theatre lists.

To demonstrate excellent leadership skills within the wider urology team.

To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Imperial College as required.

Adhere to Trust / departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

On GMC registered/ licensed Medical Practitioner MRCS or equivalent

Desirable

FRCS in Urology (or equivalent) Higher degree relevant to Urology

Language Essential

Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

Academic Achievements including Research/Publications Essential

Demonstrates understanding of the principles of research. Evidence of previous presentations and publications Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/post graduates and junior medical staff

Audit Essential

Understanding of clinical governance Evidence of active participation in audit.

Desirable

Regular audit presentations

Clinical Skills Essential

Clinical judgment: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knowing when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need. Practical skills: shows excellent aptitude for practical skills required in the job. Proven ability to work effectively in the various different clinical settings required in the job. Evidence of accuracy, care and timely recording of all necessary clinical data, both written and electronic.

Relevant Experience in Specialty/Sub Specialty Essential

Experience in Urology and subspeciality experience in urological cancer. Evidence of competence and experience of appropriate independent decision-making outof-hours (when not directly supervised).
