Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditor to join our Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Clinical Coding Team.
At NCA, you will undertake high-quality audits across one of the widest and most complex specialty ranges in the NHS -- from obstetrics and neonates to spinal, neurosurgery, rehab and major trauma.
Working under the direction of the Clinical Coding Audit Manager, you will support delivery of the Trust's audit programme, completing a varied portfolio of audits and assurance activities in line with NHS England's Clinical Coding Audit Methodology.
You will work with the wider leadership team to translate audit findings into actionable insights, support practical improvement plans and champion continuous quality improvement across the organisation.
Applicants should be NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditors with strong analytical, communication and reporting skills. We also welcome applicants with a confirmed place on NHS England's 2026/27 Auditor Programme Assessment Day.

Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Coding Auditor, you will support the delivery of the Northern Care Alliance's internal clinical coding audit programme, undertaking a range of audits, thematic reviews and assurance activities in line with NHS England's Clinical Coding Audit Methodology. You will review coded activity across multiple specialties, identify variances, analyse root causes and produce clear, evidence-based reports that support high-quality, accurate and standards-compliant coding.
Working closely with the Clinical Coding Audit Manager, you will help translate audit findings into practical improvements, key learning points and updates to local policy, supporting a culture of continuous quality improvement. You will contribute to mortality review audits, including those linked to indicators such as HSMR and SHMI, ensuring underlying coded data is robust and reliable.
The role involves direct engagement with clinical coders, operational managers and clinical teams, promoting strong documentation standards and improving understanding of national coding rules. You will maintain NHS England Approved Auditor status and keep your coding knowledge current, while occasionally working across multiple NCA sites to support audit delivery.

Qualifications Essential
NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditor Accredited Clinical Coder status (ACC) Clinical Coding Refresher Course within the last 3 years
Registration Desirable
Registration with an appropriate health informatics professional body, e.g. IHRIM, FEDIP, AphA
Experience, Skills, Training & Experience Essential
Clinical Coding Audit Experience Proficient in using Microsoft Excel and Word (or equivalent spreadsheet and word-processing applications) Experience of engaging with a variety of staff at all levels - including clinical and non-clinical colleagues outside of the Clinical Coding Department
Desirable
Experience in conducting mortality reviews and understanding how these relate to HSMR and other mortality indicators. Experience of using Data Analytics tools such as benchmarking and SQL skills
