Job summary

The Liaison Psychiatry service based at Kings Mill hospital is offering a substantive Band 6 Liaison Nurse post for an organised, highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who has excellent communication skills, a flexible approach to work and are committed to working with patients aged 18 and over. This role will involve working across both teams - which will include working age and older age adults

This post is open to both experienced Nurses who are already operating at a band 6 level or above and experienced band 5 Nurses who will be supported into a band 6 position during induction process.

Main duties of the job

The Liaison Psychiatry service for seeks to deliver a comprehensive, integrated liaison psychiatry service for people over the age 18 in all departments of Kings Mill Hospital. The older age service covers Newark General and Mansfield and Ashfield Community Hospitals. It provides a year round proactive supportive service to our acute colleagues to facilitate the best possible care to those presenting with mental health conditions such as dementia, acute confusion and delirium.

The focus of our work includes urgent assessments in respect of self harm and mental health emergencies, advice and support to wards in respect of patients experiencing mental health problems and also work in areas such as Medically Unexplained Symptoms.

A core requirement of our service is to provide training and education to our acute hospital colleagues and it is expected that the successful applicant will take an active role in this.

Job description Job responsibilities

To determine management plans, and where appropriate deliver short term psychological treatments, for people who are referred following self-harm or as psychiatric emergencies based upon a comprehensive psychosocial, risk and needs assessment of that individual.

To determine whether people who present with suicidal behaviours or thinking are safe to be allowed to leave the general hospital.

To manage as appropriate to reduce risk.

Provision of psychological treatment/support to people who have physical illness or difficulties and associated mental distress or disorder in order to improve the functioning or quality of life of that person.

We have a strong focus on working together as a team and on patient and carer satisfaction.

We proudly offer a thorough and robust induction package to this role and we ensure that all new starters are given enough training and time spent as a supernumerary staff member to ensure that they are comfortable in the role before they are expected to work autonomously. We provide an excellent system of supervision to ensure that practitioners are always supported in their decision making. As such, you do not need to have previous experience in liaison psychiatry to be able to apply for this job.

When fully established in this role, key areas of performance will include effective team working skills, effective written and spoken communication, being able to work under pressure to deliver compassionate and person centred care and be able to carry out sound risk and mental health assessments.

Essential criteria include a professional qualification and registration (Mental Health Nurse), appropriate mental health experience and a commitment to reflective practice and learning and development.

Our service operates 24/7 and night shifts would form a part of the working pattern.

Contractual Requirements Essential

To work shifts covering 7 days a week at 37.5 hours per week A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.
