Description of BHIP
A growing body of evidence indicates that primary care visits are an under-utilized delivery method by which providers can work together to identify and treat patients who require, but would not otherwise seek, psychological care. Through BHIP, Montefiore Medical Group provides access to high-quality, evidence-based care to upwards of 300,000 Bronx residents with mental health needs. Provision of behavioral health services in the primary care setting helps remove the stigma often associated with mental health care; a stigma that creates a barrier to care in many circumstances.
Our interventions target patients who present with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and ADHD, as well as those who have suffered traumatic life events or adverse childhood experiences. This treatment model has far-reaching and significant implications for the ways in which mental health care is delivered. Joining the BHIP team will give you clinical exposure to this evolving model of care and/or provide support and data to cultivate your own research questions.
BHIP’s services start with HealthySteps, an evidence-based, interdisciplinary pediatric primary care program that utilizes a preventative-based approach to promote the physical, emotional, and intellectual growth and development of very young children (0-5yo). In HealthySteps, a behavioral health provider is integrated into pediatric primary care practices and provides families with tailored support for various concerns, including behavior, sleep, feeding, attachment, parental depression, social determinants of health, and adapting to life with an infant or toddler.
As patients grow, BHIP continues to support mental health needs via short term intervention and the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM). CoCM is an evidence-based approach to care that prioritizes patient engagement with regular symptom monitoring. While severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) may still require referral to the community, the data showing the efficacy for CoCM to manage depression, anxiety, trauma, and ADHD in primary care is robust.
