Job summary

Independently assess, diagnose, and manage patients with a wide range of ocular motility disorders, amblyopia, strabismus, and visual function problems.

Undertake specialist orthoptic assessments for paediatric, adult, and special needs patients.

Contribute to extended roles such as stroke, neuro-ophthalmology, or low vision clinics (depending on service needs and training).

Provide orthoptic input into multidisciplinary clinics (e.g., paediatric ophthalmology, maxillofacial, neurology).

Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in line with Trust and HCPC requirements.

Work cross site between Grimsby, Scunthorpe and occasionally Goole

Job description Job responsibilities

To work as an autonomous practitioner and to be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work in the investigation, diagnosis and management of orthoptic patients. To prioritise own clinical workload and keep accurate contemporaneous records. The post holder will be expected to work unsupervised, individually and as part of a team, using own initiative. Senior staff members are available for discussion and consultation. Run single handed Orthoptic clinics. Use all equipment safely and without risk to patients. To liaise with other health care professionals and others when required. To be directly involved in the supervision and teaching of orthoptic undergraduate students and other health professionals in aspects of orthoptic investigation (practical and theory). Plan and carry out personal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in line with BIOS and Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirements. To work within Professional Guidelines. Maintain registration with the Health Care Professions Council and abide by their rules and regulations. Knowledge of departmental and Trust policies and procedures and to work accordingly. Contribute to the development of departmental guidelines, policies and procedures, orthoptic service development and promoting the profession. Person Specification

Education / Qualifications Essential

BSC (Hons) Orthoptics or equivalent HCPC registration as an Orthoptist

Desirable

Post-graduate qualification or extended role training

band5/6 orthoptist Essential

Knowledge of a wide range of orthoptic conditions. Sound knowledge of orthoptic clinical practice and evidence-based care.

One years post-qualification clinical experience
