Job summary
We are seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in PMRT & Bereavement
This is a combined Obstetric and Gynaecology post where you will be expected to develop services within their specialised area working in close collaboration with other consultants and be expected to cover labour ward on a rotational basis along with ante-natal and general gynaecology clinics, elective and emergency theatres.

We are investing in Midwives across our services, which includes strategies for international midwifery recruitment.
Our maternity services work in collaboration with King's College London to deliver specialist Fetal Medicine services at Southend and Basildon and our Gynaecology Oncology Centre at Southend continues to build strategic and collaborative links with our tertiary network centres across the East of England.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will join the Obstetrics & Gynaecology consultant team to deliver high-quality maternity and gynaecology care, with a specific leadership role in Perinatal Mortality Review Tool (PMRT) processes and bereavement care.
They will be responsible for overseeing timely, accurate and compassionate multidisciplinary reviews of perinatal deaths, ensuring learning is embedded and families are supported throughout. The consultant will work closely with the Bereavement Midwifery Team, Neonatal colleagues, Governance, and the Local Maternity & Neonatal System (LMNS) to ensure high standards of safety and care.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
MBBS or Equivalent Completed MRCOG or equivalent ATSM in Maternal Medicine CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or equivalent Full GMC registration
Desirable
ATSM in Medical Education Any additional qualifications in Pregnancy Care SITM
Experience Essential
Demonstrable involvement in perinatal mortality review processes (e.g., PMRT, serious incident investigations, MBRRACE). Commitment to high-quality family-centred bereavement care. Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable
Previous leadership in PMRT or mortality review programmes. Training in bereavement communication (e.g., Resolve Through Sharing, Sands training).
Teaching, Research and Audit Experience Essential
Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff ability to teach clinical skills Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
Desirable
Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal Ability to supervise postgraduate research
