About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a compassionate and motivated Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join our Older Adult Mental Health inpatient team.

You will support older adults with complex mental health and physical care needs, working closely with registered nurses and the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, person-centred care.

This role requires excellent communication skills, a caring approach, and a commitment to promoting dignity, independence, and recovery.

Main duties of the job

Deliver high-quality, person-centred care to older adults with functional mental health needs.

Support patients with activities of daily living, ensuring dignity, respect, and independence are maintained

Observe, monitor, and accurately record patients' mental state, behaviour, and physical health, reporting concerns promptly to registered staff

Undertake enhanced therapeutic observation of care in line with risk assessments and care plans

Assist with physical health monitoring, including vital signs, nutrition, hydration, mobility, and skin integrity

Support patients to engage in therapeutic, social, and recreational activities

Contribute to the maintenance of a safe, calm, and therapeutic ward environment

Respond appropriately to distress, confusion, and behaviours that challenge, using de-escalation techniques

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and members of the multidisciplinary team

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with Trust policy

Support and act as a role model for Band 2 staff, students, and new starters as appropriate

Adhere to infection prevention, safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality requirements

Uphold Trust values and contribute to service improvement and quality of care

Qualifications and Knowledge Essential

To possess a health related NVQ Level 3 qualification or Equivalent Care certificate/ willing to work towards

Desirable

Certification in Phlebotomy Certification in ECG

Experience Essential

To demonstrate an understanding of provision of nursing care. Experience of team working

Desirable

To have experience of working in a mental health care environment. Experience working within the NHS

Skills and Competencies Essential

Excellent verbal communication and listening skills with patients/colleagues/carers Sufficient IT skills to learn the systems required for clinical recording, incident reporting and equipment / stock ordering
