We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Prescribing Nurse with an interest in Paediatrics to join our multidisciplinary primary care team. The role will involve autonomous clinical practice, including assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, health promotion, and management of acute and chronic conditions within scope of practice. Main duties of the job

A Prescribing Nurse with an interest in Paediatrics in Primary Care is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating, and prescribing for patients within their scope of practice, with a particular focus on children and young people. Duties include managing acute and minor illnesses, supporting long-term condition management, providing health promotion and safeguarding support, delivering evidence-based care, and working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team. The role also involves maintaining accurate clinical records, supporting families with advice and education, and ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care within the practice or PCN setting.

Job Summary

The Prescribing Nurse Practitioner with an Interest in Paediatrics will work autonomously and as part of the multidisciplinary primary care team to provide high-quality, evidence-based care to the practice population.

The postholder will assess, diagnose, treat, and prescribe for patients within their scope of practice, with a particular focus on supporting the care of children and young people presenting with acute and ongoing healthcare needs. The role includes management of minor illness, health promotion, safeguarding responsibilities, and supporting the delivery of safe, responsive, and patient-centred services within general practice.

The role will contribute to improving access, reducing GP workload, and supporting integrated working across the practice and wider Primary Care Network (PCN).

Primary Responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the role. There may, on occasion, be a requirement to carry out other tasks depending on workload and staffing levels.

a. Assess, diagnose, treat, and prescribe for patients within scope of practice b. Independently manage patients presenting with acute minor illness and routine primary care presentations c. Provide clinical assessment and treatment for children and young people presenting with common childhood illnesses d. Deliver evidence-based care and advice to patients, families, and carers e. Identify, manage, and support patients at risk of developing long-term conditions f. Refer patients directly to other services and healthcare professionals as appropriate g. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in line with legislation and professional standards h. Ensure appropriate clinical coding and record management using SystmOne i. Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately j. Support the practice team in responding to clinical emergencies k. Recognise, assess, and appropriately manage mental health presentations l. Support safeguarding processes for children and vulnerable adults in accordance with local and national guidance m. Liaise effectively with external agencies and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care n. Promote health education and preventative healthcare opportunistically o. Support vaccination, screening, and public health initiatives where appropriate p. Work within NMC Code, practice policies, and clinical governance frameworks

Secondary Responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the postholder may be requested to:

a. Prescribe safely and effectively in accordance with current legislation and local prescribing policies b. Participate in local and national initiatives to improve patient care and access c. Support teaching, mentorship, and shared learning within the practice d. Participate in audit, quality improvement, and significant event reviews e. Contribute to the development of paediatric services within the practice or PCN f. Maintain professional registration and meet NMC revalidation requirements g. Participate in practice meetings, training, and continuing professional development
