About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Warwick/Stratford Hospital Outpatients nursing team as a Clinical Sister in this expanding department. We are seeking an enthusiastic highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills who has the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

You will be expected to have the flexibility to work within all areas of the Department and we are looking for someone who is positive, progressive and forward thinking. Management and team leadership skills are essential, whilst also being an active mentor.

The ability to support more junior staff is seen as an essential role. The successful candidate must be committed to improving the patient experience and ensuring the high standards that we expect for our patients are met. The post involves day to day running of the clinics, staff management and all aspects of working in a busy Outpatient Department.

Previous Outpatient experience desirable minimum of 1 year.

The service runs from Monday to Saturday and there may be some evening work/ clinics involved.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to the development of the ward team and support the Ward Manager in the delivery of a consistently high quality and cost effective service. To deputise for the Ward Manager as required.

Key ResponsibilitiesTo provide clinical and professional leadership and support to all non-medicalstaff in the ward, ensuring that nursing practice is based on current and bestevidenceTake responsibility for own personal and professional development,maintaining clinical credibility and competence at all timesKeep an up to date personal portfolio, in line with revalidation requirements inmaintaining NMC registrationEnsure that the wards philosophy is in line with the principles of clinicalgovernance and that all staff understands its significance to practiceIn conjunction with the Ward Manager ensure that KPIs, and InfectionPrevention standards are maintained each monthClinicalTo participate in the setting and maintaining of high standards of evidencebased nursingTo supervise and evaluate work of all nursing staffPromote patient and carers involvement in care planning, delivery andevaluations, ensuring junior staff develop the necessary skills to do this.Implement a communication system to keep patients and their relatives/familiesinformed of treatment and progress. Undertake audits at regular intervals tomaintain standards of record keeping.Supervises and monitors junior staff in developing the necessary skills toidentify care priorities and address them in a pertinent and timely manner,seeking advice where appropriate.Communicates and interacts with patients, carers and staff in a non-judgmentalway, demonstrating mutual respect and trust utilising a variety ofcommunication skills.To ensure patients and relatives needs are met in a courteous, helpful andcompassionate mannerTo liase with other agencies and professionals to maintain good serviceprovisionMaintain effective relationships between the ward and the multi-disciplinaryteamTo maintain accurate and comprehensive records of patients care in line withthe NMC code for record keepingCo-ordinate clinical activities within the unit and have responsibility for shiftmanagementAct as clinical leader and role model, sharing expertise with colleaguesTo ensure safety and confidentiality of patient informationManagerialTo work with the ward manager to ensure that all staff sickness is monitoredand that the Trusts sickness and absence policy is adhered to.Ensure that units equipment is serviced properly and timely to maintaincontinuity of services at all timesAct as role model and mentor to student nurses including the setting of actionplans as necessary.Adheres to the systems for reporting clinical incidents ensuring accurate andtimely completion of Trust incident forms. Monitors the practice of other staff.Investigate complaints and untoward incidents in accordance with Trust policiesand procedures. Provide statements accurately, timely and professionally.Support the ward manager in improving systems to prevent recurrence.Ensure that the wards clinical procedures and protocols are understood andadhered to by all staff. These should represent best possible practice andreflect Trust and National strategy for the management of emergency and acute patients.Contribute to the recruitment and selection of quality staff for the unit,identifying future job requirements for profiling to compliment the ward teamand to participate in induction programmes,Mentorship/preceptorship and Trust recruitment open and assessment days.In conjunction with the ward manager facilitate staff development by achievingward objectives using the principles if IPR using the KSF and developingpersonal development plans for all staff. Monitor staff performance and reportprogress to the ward manager at regular intervals.Contribute to the planning, organisation and evaluation of work, ensuringadequate induction of new staff including effective preceptorship for newlyqualified nurses and nurses new to the speciality of emergency medicine.Review the standard of ward documentation at regular intervals, benchmarkingperformance against NMC guidelines

Support Clinical Governance within the ward by utilising:-Risk ManagementEducation/trainingClinical SupervisionClinical Audit and effective best practiceEducationDevelop clinical practice through educationParticipate in in-service training programmes where appropriateShare evidence based practice with colleaguesAttend statutory training sessions annuallyManage FinanceContribute to the planning, monitoring and control of the wards resources, byensuring that the wards resources are optimised and that expenditure on payand non-pay are kept within the allocated budget.Assist the ward manager to optimise nursing resources by an even distributionof staff annual leave and matching skill mix to workload.Identifies, reports and acts upon and evaluates discrepancies between skill mixand workload within the clinical area.Ensure you adhere to the policy for booking bank and agency staff andsupervise junior staff to ensure that they do the same.Ensure all resources are used in a cost effective manner, identifying andassisting in the implementations of cost improvement initiatives.
