About this role

Job summary

The post holder is an autonomous practitioner who will provide a broad range of highly skilled specialised services to support delivery of Ophthalmology services. As a senior clinician the post holder is expected to maintain a technical caseload and be capable of managing complex cases independently, providing clinical advice and expert opinion to colleagues where necessary. Procedures are likely to involve the use of specialist and high value ophthalmic instrumentation to a high level of accuracy. Analysis and interpretation of specialist test results will be necessary in order to plan or revise individual programmes of patient care.

Main duties of the job

Conduct adult and paediatric ophthalmic examinations, including for patients with learning difficulties. Use specialist ophthalmic equipment and administer ophthalmic drugs as per regulations. Analyse and interpret clinical test results to assess and manage patient care. Provide specialist advice to patients, carers, and professionals. Manage a specialist caseload independently using evidence-based approaches. Maintain accurate clinical and statistical records. May perform domiciliary services for patients unable to attend clinics. Contribute to the maintenance and development of ophthalmology services. Provide expert consultation and influence clinical development. Respond to enquiries and complaints with empathy and professionalism. Manage stock levels and assist in team and technical staff management. Prioritise caseloads and manage time effectively. Use fine motor skills and manual handling techniques. Work sensitively in emotionally challenging situations. Maintain concentration and adapt to unpredictable environments

Person Specification

Qualifications and/or Knowledge Essential

Masters level or equivalent demonstrable academic qualification experience to meet the specialism Bachelor of Science Degree in Ophthalmic Optics or Optometry Registration with the General Optical Council Eye Health Examination Wales accreditation

Desirable

Previous experience in a hospital eye care setting Low Vision Service Wales accreditation Masters level degree or equivalent experience in an Optometry field

Experience Essential

Significant post graduate experience within specialism Working with patients with complex needs

Experience of Team Leadership or student supervision Experience of audit or research participation Working with patients who have sight and life-threatening conditions
