About this role
Job Title: Machinist (CNC / Manual Lathe and OD/ID Grinder)Job DescriptionThis role requires an experienced, journeyman-level machinist to set up and operate CNC and manual equipment to produce high-precision components in small lot sizes. You will work with tight tolerances, interpret engineering blueprints, and use precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet strict dimensional and finish requirements. The position offers opportunities to work on a variety of machine tools, contribute to process improvements, and support a collaborative manufacturing team on either first or second shift.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC mills, CNC lathes, manual lathes, and grinders to produce precision machined components.
- Perform both CNC and conventional manual lathe operations, including setup, tooling selection, and part machining to tight tolerances.
- Operate OD/ID grinding equipment to achieve demanding dimensional and surface finish requirements.
- Interpret and work from engineering blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to plan and execute machining operations.
- Edit and prove out new and existing CNC programs using G and M code to optimize quality and efficiency.
- Perform machine changeovers multiple times per day to support small lot production with minimal queue time.
- Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers to inspect parts and verify conformance to specifications.
- Apply appropriate inspection techniques and contribute accurate information on machining processes for day-to-day quality management.
- Work with tight tolerances, including tolerances as fine as ±0.0001, while maintaining consistent quality.
- Use shop math, trigonometry, and statistical process control (S.P.C.) to support accurate machining and problem solving.
- Lift, position, and move parts and tooling safely between machines and work areas as needed.
- Communicate effectively with cell members, manufacturing support staff, and engineers to coordinate work and resolve issues.
- Exercise sound judgment in planning work, setting priorities, and making decisions related to machining processes.
- Recognize and adapt to improvement opportunities in processes, tooling, and methods as they arise.
- Work safely in a team environment, demonstrate self-motivation, and accept responsibility for quality and throughput.
- Ensure parts are manufactured complete at the machine, minimizing the need for subsequent deburring, part marking, or inspection outside the cell.
Essential Skills
- Journeyman-level experience as a machinist capable of working independently in a precision machining environment.
- 35 years of CNC machining experience in an industrial environment.
- Proficiency in CNC and manual lathe setup and operation.
- Hands-on experience operating OD/ID grinding equipment for precision applications.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints and sketches.
- Working knowledge of G and M code and the ability to edit CNC programs at the machine.
- Comfort working with tight tolerances, including ±0.0001.
- Proficient use of precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers.
- Ability to apply inspection tools and techniques to verify part quality.
- Ability to use shop math, trigonometry, and S.P.C. in daily work.
- Ability to lift, position, and move up to approximately 4050 pounds safely as needed.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members and engineering staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work safely, be self-motivated, and take ownership of responsibilities.
- Proven competency in precision machining on CNC machining centers, CNC lathes, and manual lathes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with OD/ID grinders beyond the core requirements is a plus.
- Exposure to rigging and overhead crane operation for safe handling of larger components.
- Familiarity with Mazatrol controls.
- Experience with Mastercam for programming or editing CNC programs.
- Background in manual machining beyond lathe work is beneficial.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in machining processes and workflows.
- Comfort working in a small-lot, low-queue-time production environment where flexibility is important.
