About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a highly competent and enthusiastic individual to join our busy and friendly team as a band 5 BMS in Histology at the Royal United Hospital Bath.

The role requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail across all areas of the Histology laboratory, including tissue transfer, embedding, microtomy, special stains, immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridisation (ISH), and digital pathology. The post-holder will also contribute to essential housekeeping tasks, equipment management and maintenance, and quality assurance processes. We welcome applications from candidates who not only meet our technical requirements but also demonstrate strong communication skills, effective teamwork, and excellent time-management and organisational abilities. Applicants who have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio and hold HCPC registration are preferred; however, individuals who are actively working toward these requirements will also be considered

Main duties of the job

A Biomedical Scientist (BMS) who must have successfully completed the HCPC registration portfolio.

The post holder is accountable to the Head of Department through the Healthcare Science Service Manager for the satisfactory performance of his/her duties. The BMS staff are also expected to work as a team with, and support, the MLAs, in the delivery of a flexible service within the department and will:-

Work to defined policies and seek advice as necessary. As a technically qualified member of the department will carry out appropriate technical roles and support the non-technical and management elements of the department. Take specific responsibility for microtomy, specimen dissection, processing, embedding, frozen sections, specialist techniques, immunocytochemistry and microscopy. Ensure compliance with Department Health & Safety regulations & policy.
