About this role

Project Description

Viet Nam’s Ministry of Education and Training is looking for experienced educators and recent graduates to strengthen in-country English language skills.

Viet Nam is extending its seven-year English curriculum to 10 years, and new language competency standards have been established for both teachers and college students. Public high schools are requesting native English speakers to support language acquisition in the classroom and adequately prepare students for national exams. To prepare students for the workforce, Viet Nam has made English proficiency a national priority and is looking for experienced educators and recent graduates to equip the country’s next generation of leaders with the English skills they need to thrive.

As a High School English Teacher, you will work with school staff to improve students’ English language learning. By teaching classes and engaging in daily conversations at school and within the larger community, you will enhance intercultural understanding between the people of Viet Nam and the United States. The work you do will prepare Vietnamese students and teachers for their national exams and career endeavors, equipping them with the English skills they need to succeed. Finally, as a member of the sixth group of Volunteers to serve in Viet Nam, you will lay the groundwork for the program’s future.

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Living Conditions

Volunteers will live on school compounds on the outskirts of the Ha Noi or Ho Chi Minh City districts. They will be assigned to high schools and live in towns or smaller communities. English proficiency in these communities will likely be low. Volunteers will have access to markets and transportation to the city. Wireless internet access is readily available in most places, though the connection speed and consistency vary.

Volunteer housing meets the Peace Corps’ safety and security requirements. School officials and teachers will be actively involved in Volunteers’ day-to-day life to support their health and safety. Teachers, school leaders, and government officials will be interested in Volunteers’ work, language development, and community integration. Volunteers should note that the Government of Viet Nam routinely monitors social media usage.

Job Highlights

Receive practical training that prepares you to teach English internationally.

Experience the vast cultural traditions and ways of life of those who call Viet Nam home.

Build real-world youth development and professional skills while working with schools and communities in Viet Nam.

Activities

Assess and improve students’ existing English language skills.

Prepare interactive teaching aids, games, and classroom materials.

Teach engaging English classes that meet the national curricula and support various learning styles.

Foster intercultural exchange opportunities.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as tutoring, teaching at the American Center, or supporting after-school clubs.

Training

As a High School English Teacher, you will be trained on core methodologies for teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), such as communicative language teaching, lesson planning, and curriculum design. In addition, you will receive comprehensive language, culture, safety, and health training. Learning Vietnamese will help you comfortably live in and integrate into the community.

After ten weeks of training, you will move to a rural or urban community where you will collaborate with English teachers and school staff. Together, you will strengthen formal instruction and create informal opportunities for students to become more confident communicating in English.
