About this role

We’ve been proudly serving Australian communities since 1914 and have grown to become a top 30-listed company on the ASX with a portfolio of iconic homegrown brands. At the heart of our continued success is over 115,000 team members working across the country, all contributing to bringing our customers smiles. You’ll not only get to see your work make a difference, you’ll be part of a team working together to help Australians eat and live better every day.

About the team

As the way Australians shop continues to evolve, our Data and AI Team keep Coles at the forefront of modern retail. We combine data, artificial intelligence, and applied engineering to reimagine how our stores, supply chain, and digital channels operate — creating smarter, more connected, and seamless experiences for our customers and team members.

Operating as a centralised development and enablement function within Coles Technology, the team unites product, engineering, and platform capabilities to deliver the intelligence layer of the enterprise. We serve every part of Coles — from computer vision applications that enhance in-store experiences and reduce loss, to forecasting, optimisation, and decision-support solutions that drive efficiency, accuracy, and agility across our supply chain, retail operations, and corporate functions.

The scale and impact of this work are significant. Coles serves millions of customers each week across more than a thousand stores nationwide, and our AI and data capabilities provide the intelligence that underpins how we plan, move, sell, and serve. By combining deep data capability with applied AI and modern engineering, we’re enabling Coles to become a truly AI-enabled enterprise, transforming how we operate and how Australia shops every day.

About the role

A new and exciting opportunity of a Senior Platform Manager – Integration Platforms has risen within our Data and AI Technology portfolio.

The primary responsibilities of this position are mentioned below:

  • Act as the single threaded owner for the availability, resilience, security, scalability, cost and evolution of the Integration platform portfolio.
  • Own the full platform lifecycle: strategy, roadmap, architecture, build, test, release, operate, recover, improve and retire.
  • Lead platform strategy and roadmaps across enterprise scheduling and integration capabilities such as Control-M, DataStage, APIs, API management, eventing, Kafka, MQ and related services.
  • Establish explicit service ownership, decision rights, engineering standards, support models, SLOs, SLAs and operational-readiness criteria.
  • Own production health, observability, capacity, performance, disaster recovery, platform currency and the elimination of recurring incidents.
  • Provide leadership for significant incidents, from detection and containment through restoration, root-cause analysis and permanent remediation.
  • Own the quality and safety of production change, including risk assessment, dependencies, testing evidence, rollback, go/no-go decisions and post-change validation.
  • Drive platform engineering through automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, policy-as-code, automated testing, self-service capability and reduced manual toil.

Leadership

  • Lead, coach and hold Principal Engineers, Lead Engineers, Engineers and delivery partners accountable for platform outcomes.
  • Create a high-performance engineering culture where ownership is explicit, risks are raised early and recurring problems are permanently engineered out.
  • Balance immediate restoration and delivery pressures with long-term resilience, maintainability, security and platform simplification.
  • Communicate platform health, risks, investment choices and decisions clearly to Technology Leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Build internal capability, succession and technical depth, reducing key-person and vendor dependency.

About you and your skills

  • Proven years of experience in enterprise platforms and/or engineering leadership and leading business critical platforms or engineering teams at senior-management level.
  • Proven end-to-end accountability for highly available production services and material technology change.
  • Demonstrated experience leading significant incidents, service restoration, root-cause analysis and permanent remediation.
  • Strong experience across enterprise integration patterns, APIs, API management, eventing, messaging, workload automation and data movement.
  • Experience with integration and scheduling technologies such as Kafka, MQ, Control-M, DataStage and cloud-native integration services.

  • Demonstrated ownership of cybersecurity remediation, vulnerability management, patching, platform currency and technology-risk controls.
  • Experience developing multi-year platform strategies and translating architecture into funded, executable roadmaps.
  • Experience managing production readiness, material technology changes and risk-based go/no-go decisions.
  • Financial and commercial ownership across run costs, cloud or infrastructure consumption, licensing, vendors and investment cases.
  • Demonstrated experience simplifying complex technology estates, reducing duplication and retiring legacy capability.
  • Experience leading cross-functional, onshore, offshore and supplier teams through ambiguity and operational pressure.
  • Proven stakeholder-management capability across engineering, architecture, operations, security, executive leadership and business functions.
  • Experience building internal engineering capability while reducing key-person and external-vendor dependency.

Commercial Skills

  • Strong owner mindset, with the judgement and authority to make risk-based decisions and challenge or stop unsafe change.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, platform engineering, resilience, observability, capacity, performance and recoverability.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise integration technologies, including APIs, API management, Kafka, MQ, workload automation, data movement and cloud-native integration services.
  • Ability to define and operate meaningful SLOs, service-health measures and outcome-based platform scorecards.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, SRE, CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, policy-as-code, automated testing and engineering automation.
  • Strong knowledge of security-by-design, access control, vulnerability remediation, platform currency, audit and technology-risk management.
  • Ability to identify and manage customer, business and downstream impacts across complex platform dependencies.
  • Ability to simplify complex technology estates, remove duplication, reduce technical debt and establish repeatable engineering mechanisms.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, including platform economics, total cost of ownership, vendor management and investment prioritisation.
