About this role
Job Description
The Chief of Staff multiplies the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer's impact by making sure the their time, attention, and decisions go to the highest-value priorities, and that the AI Center of Excellence (CoE) executes on them with speed and alignment.
The Chief of Staff owns the Chief AI Officer's priorities, frames the decisions that reach them, runs the CoE's operating rhythm, leads time-boxed strategic projects, and shapes how U. S. Steel's AI story is told to executives and the enterprise. The role works through influence, partnering with executive sponsors and business leaders across United States Steel Corporation and with every part of the CoE: strategy, delivery, value, adoption, data, platforms, and security.
The role is also a visible model of AI-enabled work. The Chief of Staff is expected to use generative AI daily to synthesize information, prepare briefings, and run their own workflow, and to help the CoE do the same.
This is an exceptional opportunity to learn how AI is scaled across U. S. Steel from the inside, to sit at the table for some of the company's most important decisions, and to build the breadth of experience that prepares someone for larger leadership roles.
Key Responsibilities
The role's responsibilities fall into three core competency areas. Each describes a broad capability the Chief of Staff must demonstrate, followed by the work that capability supports.
- 1. Executive Partnership & Judgment
Acts as a trusted extension of the Chief AI Officer, using sound judgment, discretion, and the confidence to challenge when it matters.
- Own the Chief AI Officer's agenda. Align the Chief AI Officer's time, priorities, and annual goals. Triage incoming issues, requests, and decisions so attention goes to strategic work rather than reactive work.
- Anticipate and prepare. Turn technical, portfolio, and financial detail into briefings, talking points, and presentations, anticipating the questions senior leaders will ask. Attend most meetings with the Chief AI Officer and drive follow-through.
- Frame decisions. Bring issues to the Chief AI Officer with clear options and a recommendation, and push back respectfully, including more senior leaders, when it serves the Chief AI Officer and the enterprise.
- Represent and translate. Within agreed decision rights (see below), speak and draft communications on the Chief AI Officer's behalf, and translate the Chief AI Officer's priorities into clear direction for CoE leaders, team members, and stakeholders.
- 2. Operational Leadership & Execution
Builds the rhythm, accountability, and resources that turn the Chief AI Officer's priorities into results across the CoE.
- Run the CoE operating rhythm. Design and own the cadence of leadership, governance, and executive forums, with decision-oriented agendas and pre-reads. Integrate the Program Manager, AI's portfolio reviews and the AI use case intake and review process into that cadence.
- Close the loop. Track decisions, commitments, and action items through to closure, and escalate stalled decisions and unresolved dependencies.
- Lead special projects. Own one or two time-boxed strategic initiatives per year, from scoping to handoff. Examples include redesigning the CoE operating model, refreshing the annual AI strategy, or supporting a major vendor or partner decision.
- Manage the CoE operating budget. Track CoE staffing, consultant and vendor spend, and invoices against plan, and support the annual planning and funding cycle with Finance. Initiative-level spend and value tracking sit with the Program Manager, AI.
- Shape the CoE organization. Lead workforce planning and role definition, coordinate requisitions and onboarding with Human Resources, monitor team health, and maintain the CoE charter and organizational materials.
- 3. Strategic Communication & Influence
Shapes how AI strategy and progress are understood, and builds the relationships that align executives, business leaders, and the CoE.
- Own the AI narrative. Turn the Program Manager, AI's portfolio reporting, together with value and adoption updates from across the CoE, into a single executive-level story with a clear "so what." Work with Corporate Communications and the CoE's literacy and adoption team to keep messaging on AI strategy and progress consistent.
- Design executive forums. Convene executive sponsors and business leaders to align on AI priorities, leadership meetings, offsites, and executive team briefings.
- Extend the Chief AI Officer's reach. Build relationships at all levels, internal and external. Serve as the executive-level point of contact for business leaders seeking engagement with the CoE, routing requests to the right team. Functional and business-unit relationships are led by the Program Manager, AI.
- Model AI-enabled ways of working. Apply generative AI to the Chief of Staff's own workflow, share what works with the CoE, and continuously simplify processes to increase team effectiveness.
