Ready to grow with us?
Apply today and help us build a more inclusive, sustainable future in the world of satellite technology Role Overview Eutelsat is seeking an experienced End-to-End Functional Architect to define and coordinate functional architecture of complex satellite communication systems and services. The role is responsible for translating service needs, operational use cases, system requirements into coherent end-to-end functional architectures. This includes defining functional chains, identifying functions required to deliver each service, allocating those functions across the relevant system domains and establishing the interactions and information flows between them.
The role requires close coordination with internal engineering teams, suppliers, partners and programme stakeholders to resolve cross-domain functional issues and maintain architectural consistency throughout the system lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Functional Architecture definition Define and maintain the end-to-end functional architecture for assigned services, capabilities and operational use cases.
- Develop end-to-end functional chains describing how services are orchestrated, established, delivered, maintained, monitored and terminated across the system.
- Identify the system functions required to support each service and define their relationships, dependencies, states and interactions.
- Allocate functions across the relevant user, service, 5G, network, space, ground and operations domains.
- Define the functional boundaries between system elements and ensure that responsibilities are clearly allocated without gaps, ambiguity or unnecessary duplication.
- Define end-to-end functional behaviour for nominal operation, degraded modes, failure conditions, recovery scenarios and operational interventions.
- Define the information exchanged between functions and establish the functional needs to be reflected in internal and external interface requirements.
- Architecture coordination and consistency Maintain the agreed functional architecture baseline for the assigned scope.
- Coordinate the resolution of functional architecture issues spanning multiple subsystems, engineering disciplines, suppliers, partners or organisational boundaries.
- Assess proposed architecture changes, design solutions and supplier submissions for consistency with the agreed end-to-end functional architecture.
- Identify architectural assumptions, constraints, dependencies and unresolved issues, and ensure that they are visible to the relevant stakeholders.
- Lead or contribute to architecture trade studies, system architecture reviews, design reviews and technical governance forums.
- Provide technical guidance to domain architects, engineering teams, suppliers and partners on the interpretation and application of the functional architecture.
- Architecture coordination and consistency Ensure consistency between service definitions, operational use cases, functional architecture, system requirements and subsystem responsibilities.
- Support the decomposition and allocation of service-level and system-level requirements into verifiable functional requirements.
- Work with interface owners to ensure that interface requirements support the relevant functional chains, information exchanges and allocated behaviours.
Maintain traceability between services, use cases, functions, requirements, interfaces and verification objectives. Work with integration, verification and validation teams to define end-to-end verification scenarios and ensure that the intended system and service behaviour can be demonstrated. Assess functional impacts arising from changes to requirements, interfaces, domain architectures or supplier solutions. Required Experience 5–10 years of relevant professional experience in end-to-end functional architecture, system architecture or systems engineering for complex telecommunications or other distributed systems.
A master’s degree or PhD in telecommunications, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline. Demonstrable experience defining functional chains, functional flows, system use cases, operational scenarios or equivalent architecture representations. Experience identifying, decomposing and allocating functions across multiple system elements or engineering domains. Strong understanding of telecommunications system architecture and the interactions between user, radio access, core network, transport, service and operations functions.
Experience maintaining consistency and traceability between services, use cases, functional architecture, requirements, interfaces and verification objectives. Experience assessing domain-level architecture or design solutions against end-to-end system needs and architectural constraints. Experience resolving technical issues that span multiple engineering disciplines, system domains or supplier responsibilities. Experience working within architecture reviews, design reviews or technical governance processes.
Ability to distinguish architectural requirements and constraints from implementation choices and supplier-specific solutions. Ability to produce clear, structured and technically rigorous architecture documentation. A degree in telecommunications, electrical engineering, computer science, systems engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Desirable Experience Experience with satellite communication systems, non-terrestrial networks or LEO, MEO or GEO satellite constellations.
Experience with 5G System architecture, including interactions between user equipment, NG-RAN, the 5G Core, transport networks and service platforms. Experience defining functional architectures spanning space, ground, user, network, service and operations domains. Understanding of IP networking, routing, packet transport and protocol-based system interactions. Experience supporting the definition and justification of end-to-end service architectures. Experience working on large-scale, multi-supplier telecommunications or system-of-systems programmes.
Experience supporting system integration, end-to-end verification, validation or operational-readiness activities. Experience maintaining architecture baselines, traceability and architectural decision rationale. Experience contributing to architecture trade studies and formal system or design reviews. Candidate Profile You combine strong technical depth with an end-to-end architectural perspective. You can translate service, operational and system needs into a coherent functional architecture while maintaining a clear distinction between architectural intent and detailed implementation.
You are comfortable working at system level and examining behaviour down to the relevant functional interfaces and protocol interactions. You can understand the implications of domain-level design choices while working collaboratively with the responsible domain architects and engineering teams. You can lead cross-domain technical discussions, constructively challenge proposed solutions and reconcile competing requirements, constraints and supplier positions. You communicate architectural decisions clearly and are able to build alignment across internal teams, customers, partners and suppliers.
The role provides broad technical influence across the service, 5G, network, space, ground and operations domains. Its central objective is to ensure that individually designed system elements operate together as a coherent end-to-end service. Eutelsat treats the protection of personal data submitted to it seriously. By submitting this application, you agree to the collection and retention of your personal data by Eutelsat and acknowledge notice of, and understand the terms of Eutelsat’s Privacy Policy (as amended from time to time).
