Ready to grow with us?

Apply today and help us build a more inclusive, sustainable future in the world of satellite technology.

We are looking for a senior software engineer to build the Linux platform software of Eutelsat's next generation LEO, multi-orbit and IRIS² user terminals: the layer that wraps the modem and the antenna subsystem, exposes them through clean and stable APIs, integration of higher layer of the User Terminal software stack to ensure tight and seamless interaction between the application functions of the UT and the NAS layer of the software stack for call setup, retry and automated recovery from failures etc.

Making the terminal manageable, observable and serviceable in the field. Everything above the physical layer that a terminal needs in order to be operated at scale sits in your scope. You will also bring the insights and know-how on how end-user applications e.g. CBH, vessel engine management, SD-WAN solution etc, interface with the User Terminal and the QoS signaling and traffic management/control on the user plane. You will work alongside our modem and RF architects and with external engineering partners.

The terminal is a constrained embedded system with real-time neighbours, so the work spans device level integration, service design and operational tooling: control and telemetry paths, secure update, diagnostics, and the interfaces towards our ground systems and our support organisation. This is a founding role in a capability under construction. The architecture, the tooling and the practices are still to be defined, and what you build will become the software foundation of the terminal portfolio.

What you'll do

  • Collaborate across teams to translate product, service and operational requirements into robust technical implementations; Design, develop and maintain the terminal platform software on embedded Linux: system services, device abstraction, inter-process communication, lifecycle and state management, and the boundary towards the modem and antenna subsystems; Design and maintain the terminal APIs: local and remote control interfaces, configuration, telemetry and event streams, versioning and backward compatibility, and the contract they establish with our ground systems and management platforms; Implement the control and monitoring paths towards the modem and the antenna manager: command sequencing, state synchronisation, error propagation, and the timing constraints these interfaces impose; Build the observability of the terminal: structured logging, metrics, event and fault reporting, capture of diagnostic data, and the remote access paths our field and Tier-4 support teams depend on; Own secure and reliable software update in the field: image management, roll-back and fail-safe behaviour, integrity and authenticity verification, and recovery from interrupted updates; Write and maintain unit and integration tests, and build the automation that keeps the platform verifiable as it grows; Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions and delivery processes, including joint reviews with external engineering partners; Assist in system validation, debugging and troubleshooting of complex issues across the software, firmware and hardware boundary, in the laboratory and on deployed terminals; Contribute to the board support package and integration work: build system, root filesystem, device drivers and kernel interfaces, boot and resource partitioning on a system on chip shared with real-time functions; Mentor engineers and promote best practice in software design, testability and maintainability; Engage professionally with internal stakeholders, partners and customers to ensure the platform serves the operational reality rather than the specification alone.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering or a related field; 10+ years of experience in software development, including embedded or systems software on Linux; Strong hands-on experience with C++, including work on embedded systems and mission-critical applications; Solid understanding of embedded systems, real-time constraints, concurrency, memory management and software architecture; Experience designing and maintaining APIs and service interfaces intended to be consumed by other teams or systems, with attention to versioning and long-term stability; Comfortable with Linux at system level: init and service management, IPC, sockets and networking, filesystems, permissions, and cross-compilation for embedded targets; Proficiency with unit testing frameworks and methodologies, and with continuous integration on embedded targets; Practical debugging skills across the software and hardware boundary: core dumps, tracing, profiling, and instrumentation of a running system; Eagerness to learn and work with Rust; existing Rust experience is a plus; Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or collaboratively, including with engineers from partner organisations; Comfortable building a capability rather than inheriting one, with little existing tooling or process to rely on; Eligibility under applicable European and United States export control regulations; Fluent professional English.

Nice to have Experience with satellite terminals, routers, set-top boxes or other connected customer premises equipment deployed at scale; Experience with Yocto or Buildroot, board support packages, kernel and driver work; Experience with secure boot, signed images, key management and field update mechanisms; Experience with remote management and telemetry at fleet scale, and with the protocols used for it; Familiarity with networking beyond the socket: routing, tunnelling, quality of service, and IP behaviour over a variable satellite link; Willingness to contribute occasionally to front-end work, such as local user interfaces, installation tools or diagnostic web applications interacting with the terminal; Familiarity with JavaScript, TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as Vue.js or React, and with responsive interface principles; Experience accepting or qualifying software developed by another organisation.

Where You'll Be: Paris, London or Turin. Eutelsat treats the protection of personal data submitted to it seriously. By submitting this application, you agree to the collection and retention of your personal data by Eutelsat and acknowledge notice of, and understand the terms of Eutelsat’s Privacy Policy (as amended from time to time).
