About this role
At TE, you will unleash your potential working with people from diverse backgrounds and industries to create a safer, sustainable and more connected world. Job Overview The Data and Devices Business Unit is seeking an R&D Product Development Engineer to develop high-speed connector and cable assembly solutions for servers, storage, networking, AI infrastructure, industrial automation, robotics, and other emerging applications.
- The engineer will contribute across the product development cycle, including Voice of Customer (VOC) and requirement definition, concept development, product design, engineering analysis, prototyping, validation, qualification, customer engagement, and production release.
- The role requires a strong hands-on mechanical/product development engineer who can translate customer and application requirements into reliable, manufacturable, miniaturized, and cost-effective interconnect solutions while working closely with Signal Integrity, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, suppliers, and other global cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Support end-to-end development of high-speed connector and cable assembly solutions, from concept and feasibility through validation, qualification, and production release.
- Partner with customers, Sales, Systems Architecture, FAE, and Product Management teams to capture VOC and translate system and application needs into product requirements and preliminary specifications.
- Generate product concepts, perform feasibility studies, and develop detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Perform tolerance analysis, GD&T, DFMEA, mechanical and thermal analysis, material selection, and design optimization.
- Coordinate prototype builds, engineering testing, design verification, product qualification, and release documentation.
- Collaborate with Signal Integrity, Electrical, and RF teams to understand SI, EMI/EMC, controlled-impedance, shielding, and other electrical requirements that influence mechanical design.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles considering molding, stamping, plating, machining, assembly, cable processing, and automated manufacturing requirements.
- Conduct design reviews, engineering evaluations, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions for product-related issues.
- Work with global manufacturing, suppliers, Quality, Procurement, and Operations to achieve technical, quality, cost, schedule, and safe-launch objectives.
- Prepare and maintain engineering drawings, product specifications, design history files, ECN/PCN documentation, and qualification records.
- Develop market, customer, and application understanding and convert system-level requirements into practical, manufacturable connector and cable assembly concepts.
- Execute assigned LEANPD stage-gate activities while meeting commitments for schedule, quality, cost, risk, documentation, and launch readiness.
- Develop interconnect solutions addressing miniaturization, high-density packaging, high-speed data transmission, reliability, and power-signal integration.
- Contribute to emerging technologies and roadmaps including high-speed copper, Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), hybrid power-signal connectivity, and advanced cable assemblies.
- Support innovation through new product concepts, invention disclosures, patent-generation activities, and technical differentiation initiatives.
Candidate Desired
Profile
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 4-8 years of relevant product development experience in connectors, cable assemblies, electromechanical products, electrical components, mechanical structures, manufacturing tooling, or manufacturing process development.
- Hands-on experience in connector design, cable assembly design, or electromechanical product development, including material selection, tolerance analysis, DFMEA, qualification, and design-release documentation.
- Experience supporting products for high-speed communication systems, data-centre equipment, networking platforms, industrial automation, robotics, or related applications.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD applications, preferably Creo, including solid modelling, 2D drawings, assemblies, and product data management.
- Good knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, stamping, plating, machining, cable processing, and assembly.
- Experience with prototype development, design verification, product qualification, root-cause analysis, and engineering change management.
- Basic understanding of Signal Integrity (SI), EMI/EMC, and high-speed interconnect design considerations.
- Ability to understand customer system architectures, convert VOC into product requirements, and participate in technical discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience working in cross-functional teams involving Mechanical, Electrical/SI, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, Operations, and Supply Chain.
- Working knowledge of finite element analysis tools such as Ansys Workbench for mechanical or thermal evaluation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical documentation skills.
Fluency in written and spoken English and the ability to collaborate effectively across global teams and time zones. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Nice To Have Skills/Experience
Master’s degree in engineering or a related field. Experience with high-speed connector or cable assembly development for datacentre, networking, AI infrastructure, industrial automation, smart transportation, or robotics applications. Exposure to signal-integrity simulation, system-architecture studies, controlled-impedance interconnects, or high-speed serial interfaces. Basic understanding of Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), Power over Data Lines (PoDL), hybrid power-signal connectivity, and advanced cable technologies.
