Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position: Sr Development Engineer responsible for leading and working within multi-discipline teams to design, develop, and industrialize tooling and manufacturing equipment for Hyperscale Data Center quartz machining — targeted at improved product attributes, reduced cost, or increased manufacturing output of optical fiber. Serves as the tooling development lead across Hyperscale Data Center quartz machining operations, including optical fiber preform, drilling, and grinding.

  • Day to Day

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the tooling development lead for Hyperscale Data Center quartz machining — specify, design, and validate drilling, grinding, and machining tooling, fixturing, and custom workholding across quartz operations.
  • Design, develop, and industrialize Hyperscale Data Center manufacturing equipment platforms and automation (platform = process + equipment) to enable new and improved optical fiber manufacturing processes.
  • Use established fundamentals of mechanical and equipment design engineering to identify concepts for manufacturing equipment and tooling; and design, build and test selected concepts as an individual and in teams to enable improved and new manufacturing equipment and processes.
  • Specify, integrate, test and validate mechanical hardware and automation, including motion, actuation, and associated safety systems.
  • Collaborate with controls engineering, process engineering, equipment deployment, and manufacturing receivers during later stages of technology development.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Similar, with 3-5 years manufacturing experience working with equipment design, tooling, and automation, or M.S. Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering, with applicable co-op and/or internship experience.

Required Skills

  • Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals including statics and dynamics, tolerances, materials, and precision machining.
  • Background in manufacturing equipment development, with working knowledge of the associated manufacturing process and relevant physical phenomena (heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, optics, etc.).
  • Equipment design and development for manufacturing — from concept and detailed design through build, integration, and commissioning, including machine layouts, component selection, and assembly drawings.
  • Automation design and development, including motion control, actuation, sensors, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, and integration of associated safety systems into an overall equipment package.
  • 3-D CAD modeling and detailed drawing capability, including GD&T, tooling, fixturing, and machine-assembly design.
  • Strong experimental, instrumentation, and analytic skills to ensure data produced is valid and traceable.
  • Desired Skills: Experience related to optical fiber manufacturing processes and equipment Experience with precision machining, deep-hole drilling, and grinding processes and associated tooling (quartz/glass machining a plus) Capable of providing solutions which require current and advanced equipment design and automation methods Strong background in machine design, tooling, and custom workholding Familiarity with dimensional metrology (CMM, X-ray CT, profilometry) Operational skills to execute equipment validation (FAT/SAT) test plans & acceptance procedures Travel
