About this role
Advanced Power Conversion | GaN & SiC Technologies | Defense-Focused Innovation
We're seeking a Power Electronics Electrical Engineer to help develop next-generation power conversion systems for highly demanding applications across defense, aerospace, naval, and advanced energy platforms. This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge wide band gap (WBG) technologies, including Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC), while contributing to complex systems deployed in land-based, shipboard, airborne, and subsea environments. You'll join a highly technical team developing advanced power electronics hardware, digital controls, high-power converters, motor drives, and real-time test systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for engineers with hands-on power electronics experience who want to work on challenging, research-driven programs with access to world-class laboratory facilities. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance. As a result, applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to satisfy federal clearance eligibility requirements. This position is not eligible for employment-based visa sponsorship.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and test advanced power electronic converters utilizing SiC and GaN semiconductor technologies.
- Support development of active rectifiers, isolated DC-DC converters, solid-state transformers, motor drives, and other high-power conversion systems.
- Create and validate digital control algorithms for power electronics applications.
- Develop Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) test environments to accelerate system validation.
- Design and support systems ranging from kilowatt-level converters to megawatt-scale power conversion platforms.
- Conduct system modeling, analysis, simulation, hardware testing, and performance validation.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Develop and execute test plans, procedures, and verification activities.
- Contribute to technical publications, white papers, patents, and customer-facing technical presentations.
- Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical reviews and design evaluations.
- Support advanced initiatives involving digital twins, real-time simulation, and emerging AI-enabled control strategies.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Professional experience designing, developing, or testing power electronics systems.
- Experience with solid-state power conversion systems above 5 kW.
- Hands-on experience with power supplies, DC-DC converters, inverters, motor drives, or related power conversion technologies.
- Knowledge of SiC and/or GaN semiconductor devices and their application in power converters.
- Experience working with medium-voltage, kilovolt-level, or high-power electrical systems.
- Familiarity with three-phase power systems and associated control methodologies.
- Experience developing digital controls using DSPs, microcontrollers, and/or FPGA-based systems.
- Understanding of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), CHIL, PHIL, or other advanced validation platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience with wide band gap semiconductor modules ranging from 1.2kV to 10kV.
- Knowledge of solid-state transformers and medium-voltage power distribution systems.
- Experience with Altium, Cadence, KiCad, or similar PCB design platforms.
- Familiarity with OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, PLECS RT Box, or similar real-time simulation environments.
- Experience with FPGA development and high-speed communication architectures.
- Background in thermal design, magnetic component design, or advanced control systems.
- Interest or experience applying machine learning and AI techniques to power systems and controls.
Why Join?
- Work on advanced defense and energy technologies that push the boundaries of modern power electronics.
- Access a state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facility featuring megawatt-scale testing capabilities.
- Collaborate with highly regarded engineers and researchers on technically challenging projects.
- Gain exposure to cutting-edge applications of GaN, SiC, digital controls, real-time simulation, and power system innovation.
- Influence product development from concept through hardware validation and deployment.
- Clear opportunities for technical growth, leadership development, and advancement within a specialized engineering organization.
