For more than 100 years, we've been making the impossible possible. Today, we're driving the energy transition with more than 30,000 of the brightest minds across 54 countries.

Job Overview

McDermott is seeking an experienced Senior Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our Houston office and support the engineering and delivery of field instrumentation and mechanical package scopes for oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation projects. This role will develop and oversee key instrumentation deliverables, provide technical support for equipment requisitions and supplier coordination, and may lead defined scopes of work as an Instrument Requisition Engineer or Mechanical Package Support Engineer. The successful candidate will also provide limited support for automation deliverables, collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, suppliers, and remote engineering offices, and apply their technical expertise to guide and mentor less-experienced engineers.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing the development of Instrument Index and Instrument Datasheets. For small projects, may be required to develop these documents. For large projects, will direct a team of support office engineers in developing the documents and will review the completed deliverables
  • Assist the Process discipline with the development of P&IDs by providing instrument tag assignments, reviewing instrument symbology, attending internal and client P&ID review meetings, and redlining instrument content to reflect scope changes
  • As a Requisition Engineer (RE) for instrument packages (e.g., valves, gauges, transmitters, flow meters), will be responsible for working with Supply Chain for the development of request-for-quote packages, technical bid evaluations, requisition for purchase packages, and reviewing supplier data. For large projects, will coordinate these efforts with support office engineers who are doing most of the work. For very small projects, will independently complete much of the work
  • As a Mechanical Package Support Engineer, will support the Mechanical discipline in developing requisition packages by providing I&C requirements for inclusion in the requisition, participating in technical bid evaluations, reviewing supplier data, and attending factory testing. For large projects, will coordinate these efforts with support office engineers who are doing most of the work
  • May be required to support the automation scope on a project, such as developing cause & effect diagrams, motor control schematics, or complex loop descriptions
  • May be required to travel to project sites for inspections or testing and to supplier facilities for factory acceptance testing of mechanical and automation packages
  • May be required to mentor early-career engineers

Essential Qualifications and Education

  • 8-12 years of experience in the oil and gas industry working as an I&C engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Detailed knowledge of current instrument technologies
  • Familiar with industry codes and standards
  • Experience working with clients and suppliers to resolve technical issues
  • Able to work in team environment with company, suppliers, and clients, including remote teams in other countries
  • Experience using MS Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel)
  • Eligible to work in the United States (US Citizen or Green Card holder)
  • Preferred experience using SmartPlant Instrumentation or Aveva
  • Preferred experience at a project site supporting construction or commissioning activities
