About this role

We are seeking an ambitious, compassionate and highly motivated Higher Level Teaching Assistant to take on a key pastoral and safeguarding role in our friendly 4-19 broad-spectrum specialist school. Our pupils have a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities, and we are looking for someone who can build trusted relationships, support emotional wellbeing and help every learner feel safe, included and ready to learn. Experience of SEND and pastoral support is important, together with excellent communication, judgement and a commitment to safeguarding.

The core purpose of the role will be:

  • Deliver and adapt learning activities and targeted interventions as an HLTA, working closely with teaching colleagues
  • Coordinate pastoral support, promote positive relationships and help pupils develop emotional regulation and resilience
  • Work in partnership with families, staff and external professionals to respond to emerging needs
  • Lead and coordinate safeguarding arrangements, referrals and record keeping where formally appointed as the school’s DSL
  • Promote a strong safeguarding culture, with particular awareness of the vulnerabilities and communication needs of pupils with SEND

The principal DSL appointment must be an appropriate senior member of the school leadership team with sufficient authority, training, time and resources. The final designation and reporting arrangements will be confirmed before appointment.
