Requirements
- Experience testing Windows desktop applications, including Microsoft .NET-based applications.
- Experience with functional, system, regression, and integration testing.
- Ability to create test cases and procedures and carry out requirements-based testing.
- Experience with UI and usability testing, defect investigation and management, technical documentation, and test reporting.
- Knowledge of networking technologies and protocols, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, and VPNs.
- Experience with SNMP, network device management, and Wireshark or similar packet/network analysis tools.
- Experience testing applications that interact directly with networking, communications, or security hardware is particularly useful.
- Current SC/DV clearance is preferred. Candidates whose SC/DV clearance has been on hold within the last 12 months may also be considered, subject to eligibility for transfer or reactivation.
- Applicants must meet the relevant nationality and security eligibility requirements.
- Advantageous experience includes Python scripting, test automation tools or frameworks, REST API testing, Linux, Azure DevOps or Jira, Network+, CCNA or similar networking knowledge or qualifications, and experience in Defence, Government, Cyber Security, communications, or another high-integrity engineering environment.
Responsibilities
- Create and execute test cases and test procedures.
- Conduct functional, regression, system, and integration testing.
- Test Windows/.NET desktop applications, including application workflows, usability, and UI functionality.
- Test communication between software applications and network-connected devices.
- Investigate, reproduce, and document software defects.
- Analyse network traffic using Wireshark or similar tools.
- Test networking and device management functionality, including SNMP.
- Support requirements validation and traceability, and produce clear test documentation and reports.
- Work with software developers and systems engineers to troubleshoot issues.
- Contribute to test automation where appropriate.

We are supporting a specialist technology and engineering business in Derbyshire with the appointment of an experienced Applications Test Engineer for an initial 6–12-month contract. The role involves testing Windows-based applications used in complex networking and communications environments, working alongside software and systems engineers in an established technical team to help ensure applications and associated systems perform reliably before release. This is a fully onsite position in Derbyshire. The day rate is negotiable depending on experience, and the contract is outside IR35.
